Moms and Moms to be: Question

How did you choose the items you wanted/bought?

DH and I are hopping on the TTC bandwagon this month and there was a really nice travel system on sale at Babies R Us  for a really good price. Since this is extra pay check month, we figured we'd buy it. But...now I feel guilty for spending so much on one stinkin' item!

Re: Moms and Moms to be: Question

  • I would look at the ratings and reviews online. I never bought anything that was gender specific as we knew we wanted other kids and weren't sure if they'd both be girls.

I wouldn't feel gulity -- if you liked it and it was a good price what's the harm?!?!  What did you end up with?

    Congrats and Good Luck TTC!!

We knew we wanted gender neutral too. We are thinking we will only have one child, but aren't totally sure, so we want to err on the side of caution.

We ended up with the S1-Pegasus by Safety First. It has awesome reviews, and we played with it in the store. We must have folded, unfolded, lifted and tried to break the thing a 1000 ways.  This is the picture: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3904367

  • My friend has that system and LOVES it as its very easy to use and durable. I'd say it was a good buy Smile
  • To choose the items we wanted or bought we just thought about our lifestyle and then looked for the item that had good reviews that would fit in with what we needed.  Like for example the carseats, I had a Beetle so the carseat would have needed to be small enough to fit in the back seat.  Gender neutral for us too because we knew we wanted more than one kid.

The TS you got looks like a good one, and if you are only planning to have one kid you should get lots of use out of the stroller.  I wish we didnt get a TS because by 5 months it was easier to put my DS in an umbrella stroller and now we are expecting again and wont be using the stroller that came with the TS.  But that is just our experience and my opinion.

Also I dont want to sound snarky or discouraging but I know I didnt feel comfortable buying anything until I was like 20 weeks pregnant.  I wouldnt have thought or wanted to buy anything before hand because I couldnt be sure how long it would take to even get pregnant, and stay pregnant.

Good Luck to you TTC :)

This. I really didn't feel comfortable buying anything until I was at least half way, even then I didn't actually bring anything into the house until we had reached viability. I am just kind of superstitious like that, I guess.  You don't want to have to think about something happening, but for me one of the worst possible things to come home to after a loss would have been baby gear all over my house.

That being said, we decided on stuff by going and playing around with it in the store. We read reviews. The book baby bargains was really helpful. I wouldn't worry as much about the price. If it is your first child chances are that you will have at least one shower and the travel system is a really popular big ticket item that people will want to buy. Even if you don't get it at your shower, you will get a registry completion coupon that will knock down the price when you close out the registry. That price will probably be equal to or more than any sale they have going on over the course of the year.

Have fun TTC, and good luck!

  • Get yourself a copy of Baby Bargains 411.  That is what helped me make every decision.

  • I agree with the Baby Bargains book.  I still refer to that for some things.

  • We asked other parent's what worked for them and checked out reviews online.  We also went to the store and played around with the travel systems.

FYI:  Buy Buy Baby has the best return policy.  We received the Motions Glider at our shower and our son didn't like it at all ....they took it back with no questions asked even though it was used.

     Good Luck =)

  • I agree with the Baby Bargains book.

However (and I hate to be this person)....I would personally hold off on purchasing anything major this early.  If I had purchased something that cost us several hundred dollars and just had it sitting around the 10 months it took us to get pregnant, I would have been annoyed with myself for not using that money for something else.  Also (and this is doubtful it will happen to you), twins were a surprise to us, so we would have had to return it anyway.

    There are always sales everywhere.

  • We relied heavily on Baby Bargains and reviews on Amazon to choose our items.

Like others have said, it might be worth waiting to buy big items.  People were so generous to us at our shower and practically all of our big items were gifted to us.
