I can't remember if I mentioned this to you guys, but I'm in charge of
doing my own updo at the wedding I'm in in a couple weeks time.
I'm
AWFUL with hair, so this is my first time really playing about with
attempting to do it. And, because my hair is SO fine, there are flyaways
all over the place. I don't know what to do about them! How do I even go about fixing that?!?
Anyway,
which of the two hairstyles do you think I should put my energy into
trying to get right? They're about the same level of difficulty.
Sorry for the blurry pics, I was trying to photograph myself...
Option 1: Roll + crossover braids

Option 2: Messy curls and loops at the back (though I didn't know I was supposed to curl my hair first)

Dang, it's hard doing your own hair.
Re: Heeeeeelllllpppp me! (DIY bridesmaid hairstyle disaster related)
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?

I think I like #1 too (although yeah, I think #2 would look better if your hair was curled first). How well does your hair hold curl? Does it naturally have any curl/wave?
- Here is a good video on plunking, which enhances your natural curl. I do this before I curl it with a curling iron and get the best results. I just spray a heat protectant and hair spray in my damp hair before doing this.
- I found this vloger recently and she has LOTS of awesome hair tutorials. She usually adds extensions, but there are some with her shorter hair and I'm sure most of them could be adapted.
Good luck!

That's who I got the first hair style from! I wish my hair was thicker for the braids. I'll check out the plunking. My hair has natural wave when it air dries, but the minute you apply heat to it, it straightens out.

I like the 2nd one. The first one is very chic (didn't you have something like that for your wedding?) but unless you can beef it up a lot, it kind of emphasizes how fine your hair is.
I can commiserate with the fine hair and flyaways! You need lots and lots of hairspray. If the 'do requires you to work in sections, spray every section thoroughly before you work with it. For example if you're using a curling iron on chunks, spray the entire chunk first and then work with it. Then spray all over when you're done. Also, bring a good shampoo for after, lol.

I used to have the same issue. Since you have some wave you'll be surprised how much the plunking can do, seriously! I was shocked that my hair had SO much natural curl. If I'm going to curl it with a curling iron, like I said, I spray lots of heat protectant (I like "blow") and hair spray (treseme ultra fine mist) before doing the plunking - both of these help get my hair 'dirty' enough. I let my hair dry about 60%, spray it and then do the plunking thing. Once it's completely dry I do stuff to it.
Also, I used to think that I should comb my hair from the naturally curly state before I used the curling iron and I've found it's not necessary - it weirdly 'fixes' itself. My hair can look like a rat's nest (lol my mom always used that phrase) and without brushing or anything, just take a section and wrap it around (I also use the method where you hold the curling iron and wrap the hair around it starting at the base).

oh and also, isn't that girl awesome!? I love all her hair tutorials and really like that first one that you tried. I just need an excuse to do my hair all fancy now...

oh! I also forgot to tell you my other new trick (I think this has been a 15+ year quest for me... lol I've finally gotten a good method down!), but this is probably more important if you wanted your hair down and curly, rather then just getting volume for an up-do.
Anyway, so like I said with the curling iron, I hold the curling iron "open", place it at the base and wrap the hair around, then let the clamp close (doesn't matter, I just get tired holding it open and don't feel the need to buy the special ones w/o the clamp). I have it on pretty hot, but I can go faster and don't need to leave on on as long because when I want to take the hair off, I let the curl drop into my hand - don't let it fall or get loose - and then I use a bobby pin to keep it's shape while it cools. I don't pin it to my head btw, just open the pin and slide the curl on. Then once I've done about 4 I spray them, dry, take the pins out. I think you get way more 'bang for your buck' with this method!
