Fort Bragg

Hey all,

I was wondering if you have any suggestions on things to do around Fort Bragg. I moved here last month. I would go out and find a job, unfortunately my husband is waiting on orders to be transferred so I didn't think that would be the smartest idea. So basically I am BORED, any ideas?

Re: Fort Bragg

  • I'm at Bragg and I actually love it. There are a bunch of gyms on post that offer free classes, and there are even a few gyms dedicated to CrossFit. There are also free pools to visit on Post like the Twin Lions Pool, Normandy Pool, Atchely Pool and the pool on Pope.

Also, the library on post just reopened.

Off post there's okay shopping on Skibo Road and a bunch of places to eat off Skibo, Cliffdale, and Morganton.

If you don't mind traveling they have a Pick Your Own Fruit Farm on Gross Farms, there's an outlet mall off exit 91 (?) and Raleigh is only 45 minutes away if you take 95 and drive fast lol. There are also a bunch of places to hike in Lillington.

Sorry I can't be any more specific but you didn't really detail what you're into and what not. HTH!

ETA. There's also the historic downtown area with a bunch of shops, places to eat and the free Special Operations and Airborne Museum is there too. It's a cute place to walk around.

And if you like working out, the Cape Fear River Trail is popular. It's 8 miles to the end and back.

  • And one more thing, if you also don't mind driving 1 1/2 hours there are some pretty nice beaches in the area. And Wilmington is adorable. There's Wrightsville, Carolina, Kure,  and Fort Fisher. And Myrtle is down south and that's only 2 hours away as well.

I "think" I might have a Travel link in my blog for things we've done in this area but I'm not 100% sure I've labeled everything so there might not be a lot under it.

  • I'm with Red, I need more information. What kind of stuff are you looking for? Outdoor, athletic, shopping? You could always take a class at Fay Tech or something.
  • I am really up for anything...anything that would get me out of the house...I have a bachelor's degree in Accounting...but can't use it right now as who knows how long we will be in the area...I guess I'm just wondering what YOU guys find interesting or what you like to do...I would prefer things that don't spend TOO much money as the  budget is kinda tight lately...but if you know of something around the area, I'm all ears...I'm not really picky...

  • You're all ears? I mean, I did just list a bunch of things to do in my other post.

  • sorry mrsredrox...I was replying to the other post...I DEFINITELY appreciate your post...I didn't realize that there were free classes at the gym which is pretty AWESOME...and as for the hiking it has been noted...and I will definitely be into doing that sometime VERY SOON...though that one will probably wait for the weekend to do that with the hubby... :)...sorry I didn't reply sooner...thanks again! :)

  • We're really game for just about anything that gets us out of the house and isn't outrageously priced.

We climb at The Climbing Place regularly. We've also gone to the $2 theater on, I think it's Sycamore Dairy, hit a few buckets at the driving range in the same area, mini golf and go-carts at Fun Fun Fun, hiking at Raven Rock Park... There's a paint your own pottery place called 'Just Claying Around' that I've wanted to go to for ages but haven't, I don't know how expensive that is. I've heard great things about Aloha Zoo. I've been to Jamba's Ranch, but please don't go there. I think PETA is trying to get charges brought against them.

I know there's an art museum in Fayetteville, but in the surrounding area (re: Raleigh, Wilmington, Durham) there's also the NC Zoo, Cape Fear Serpentarium, several aquariums, and a bunch of different museums like the Museum of Natural Science in Raleigh. I love museums and things like that so those are always on my list.

Oh and I know there's an outdoor zip line tour thing in Fayetteville and I think it's like $70 each. It looks amazing.

    Just start googling!

In addition to the Climbing Place there's Red Point which also offers Ju Jitsu, Crossfit and a whole bunch of other classes. They're kind of expensive though and I know The climbing place offers free pizza on friday's ;)

And yes, the Aloha zoo is awesome! And at Strykers on post it's only $10.00 for a bucket and the club rentals are free.

There's plenty to do around here, you just have to be willing to make a drive at times.  Hope you like it here!

  •  I live like a mile from the Cape Fear Trail and I love it, it is so pretty.

  • I know you are asking for things to do but I wanted to add one of my favorite places to eat.  The Mash House is awesome!!! It is a little mirco-brew and is just wonderful. Myrtle Beach is about 2 1/2 hours away and really easy to get to.
  • If you knit, I could recommend a couple good knitting groups...  Otherwise, it's tough to suggest things without knowing your interests.

FTCC has a lot of continuing education type classes - languages, crafts, cooking skills, other stuff.  That might be worth looking into.

  • You could also look into volunteer with ACS.  They do some financial classes for soldiers and families, and that might be good practical use for your accounting degree (and keep your skills with it current until you can look for steady work).

  • While many entertaining things have been written about the Fayetteville area, How wonderful the downtown area has not been very well described on here thus far. I feel that is where I come in!

They have the Fourth Friday of the arts every month downtown and people from all over the area come to enjoy it. It's like a monthly mini festival. And while the title says 'Arts' it's more like an excuse for the shops to stay open later and put their items on sale. The Next one is August 26th. The following is just a small part of what you'll find:

There's a drum circle at the Market House in the middle of the round about. They bring extra drums so feel free to jump in whenever you please. The belly dancing class comes out and shows their stuff to music as a group on the sidewalk and when the drum circle really gets going they'll move the party over there.

Bands play acoustic on street corners and people sell the crafts they make like candles and purses on the street. Also selling their wares, the farmers market was open last time in the parking lot of the transportation museum and the wine shop had small samples to offer. Also the Chocolate Lady (the local homemade candy shop) is in full swing on 4th Friday. Most shops that close at 5 stay open extra late on this day for all the people in good moods that show up.

My favorite places are all the great restaurants downtown. Pierro's Italian Bistro is probably one of the the top places to eat in Fayetteville. The garlic knots that come with your meal just can't be topped and there's the option to sit outside whether the weather is warm or cold (They have heat lamps!) Huske Hardware (No longer a hardware store but now in fact a brewery) has a wonderful selection of Americana food and lists the best type of beer to go with every item on the menu. My favorite is a cider available in the fall.

If you feel crafty yourself there's a paint your own pottery place called Greg's Gallery and Gifts right behind the Arts Council building.  There's a whole wall of pottery you or any children you might have can pick out and paint at the tables. Greg himself is normally right outside the door with his pottery wheel so you can stop by and watch his pottery being made. Right next to him there's a chalk artist that does these really vivid pastels on the sidewalk. It's not something you sit and just watch while it's being done but if you walk past a few times throughout the night it's pretty cool to see the art come to life.

I could go on and on about how great the fourth Fridays are but if you prefer the calm and quiet you can always go downtown on a Sunday afternoon and enjoy a cup of coffee at Rude Awakenings (there are quite a few good coffee houses down there. That one just so happens to be my pick) and then head to the Cameo Art House Theater next door.  It's a classic theater with the neon lights outside and the red velvet seats inside. They're known for playing independent films but they've been known to show things like Harry Potter and The Hangover 2 when it suits them.

Speaking of the Cameo, There's an improv group that calls themselves 'the Horrible Folks' that puts on a show every other Saturday night at 11:30. It's like watching a local version of a mix of SNL and Who's Line is it Anyway. Don't wait until the last minute to get there because the small theater can fill up fast on a big night.

And the final plus I'll list here is that Downtown Fayetteville is a nice escape from Fayetteville within Fayetteville. Don't get me wrong, I love Fay's shopping and restaurant selection but this is probably the trashiest town I've ever lived in. The traffic is terrible, too many residence have kids before ready and it shows and there's a complete lack of any sense of community until you get downtown or back on base. And even when you're back on base the bad traffic doesn't always let up. Hope to see you downtown!
