Beginner sewing book recs

Hi all! I'm overly excited to join this board as I navigate my way through learning to sew.  I just got a Brother CS6000-i sewing machine, and have found it really easy to use, but I have absolutely no experience at all.  I completely botched my first attempt at using a pattern and actually making something (very sad looking pajama pants), so I need a good book to learn the basics.

I am leaning towards The Sewing Book: An Encyclopedic Resource of Step-by-Step Techniques.  It got good reviews on Amazon and looks pretty comprehensive, but thought I'd see if anyone has some recommendations based on experience.

Since I'm a total beginner, I'd love something that takes me through technique, patterns, and gives some tips.

Thanks for any help, and I'm sure you'll be seeing more of me on here with questions... and hopefully someday to AW my sewing successes ;)

  • If you are a beginner, it would probably be helpful to take a class instead.  I know we all learn differently, but I never opened a sewing book because it wouldn't make sense for me.  I took a quilting class at my city's Bernina Sewing Center, and I know they have sewing classes at JoAnn's.  You might want to Google sewing classes in your city to see if anything comes up.  It will be a great way to learn the basics and will give you confidence to tackle other projects.  Good luck to you and hope to see a finished product soon!

  • I didn't have books when I started out...I had my mom.  While books are great, like pp suggested, taking a beginners class would probably help you out more than the book itself.

Let us know if you need any help and feel free to AW away!

You may want to change the link in your siggy.  Its against nest policy and frowned upon on the board.

  • Don't feel bad about the pattern.  I can't follow a pattern to save my life, but I do much better with tutorials.
  • Thanks so much for the input - I didn't realize JoAnn had classes (told you I was new to this) - there's one right near me, so I'll definitely check one out. Exciting!

And thanks for the heads up on the sig - now removed (although you're still stuck with looking at my cute pups).

  • There are some recs in the FAQ link at the top of the board, along with sewing tips for beginners.

  • I have the same machine and I am pretty new to sewing. I agree with taking a class but there are some great videos on YouTube that can get you started. Also practice on free material and don't be afraid to make mistakes. My seam ripper is my best friend :P
