Ok - I'm semi-freaking out - Fleas?!?!

omg so last night i'm cuddling Ratchet the Fat Cat and I notice a lil buggy crawling around so i pull it off, then another, then another, then "SAMI PLEASE GOOGLE FLEAS!"  Yeah - awesome.  Turns out my downstairs tenant has 2 cats that are in/outdoor cats - and she hasn't been keeping up on the front line.  MEANWHILE - i'm thinking I have this strange ass form of poison ivy that keeps popping up as lil blister bubbles everywhere, not in the long lines that i normally get it in.  NOPE mother'fing flea bites ALL OVER ME!  holy WFT!  freaking out.  last night - at 1130 - bed got changed, cat got a bath, dog got a bath, house got vacuumed.  Since I've woken up I've a major vaccum of the couches (gate is now up no living or bedroom for animals right now) floors, tons of laundry and this is all in lieu of the dozen photo sessions i have to edit!  AHHHH!

So - short of bombing - what steps should i take as we've never had fleas before (we use an all natural spray made up for oils for the animals before they go outside) - vet suggested flea bomb but that makes me nervous.  i f'ing hate bugs.  espicially ones that bite while I'M SLEEPING!  AHHH!

Any help would be super appreciated!

TIA!

  • ACK I don't know what to tell you that will help but I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope someone is forcing your neighbor to solve her flee problem otherwise you will just keep getting new ones no matter what you clean or bomb!
  • I think your neighbor should be the one to get bombed....I wish I had more advice!

  • I am so sorry you have to deal with this! My coworker recently had an attack of fleas at her house. She had to wash her pets every other day with this shampoo/conditioner that helps with itching and infections. Then she got this spray that she used on the carpet and couch (one of those sprays that you spray leave on for 30 minutes to an hour and then vacuumed). She was told by the vet that she would have to repeat that process again in two weeks then again in a month to make sure that all fleas are dead. Apparently when you treat the area the first time, it only kills the live fleas and not the eggs...so you have to continue to treat every two weeks for awhile to make sure all those that hatch die too.

Also, if you notice your pets really scratching themselves (especially your dog), give them half a 25mg of Benadryl (check with vet regarding kitty). Use Benadryl cream for your bites.

Good luck dealing with your neighbor on this! It will be a continued problem until she steps up to the plate and solves it on her end too.

  • Ew, that is nasty!  I have no advice except that you need to get your neighbor to solve this bug problem too, otherwise you'll never get rid of them!  Good luck, hope you killed them all

  • Ugh in Florida during the summer fleas are the WORST and they are everywhere. At our first apartment there was a huge infestation issue in their grass and of course we had to take our dog out to go to the bathroom so we had no choice but to walk him there. Our entire apartment along with all the furniture and our dog was constantly covered. We would bathe him and he would be covered again within hours. The best thing that worked for us for our dog was frontline but it is SO expensive to have to buy all the time if you are on a budget. The issue got so bad we ended up deciding to move when our lease was up. Our bedroom area was so infested that once we got everything out of the room, you could literally see all the fleas jumping off the carpet. We tried bombs, sprays, powders and NOTHING worked. Hope everything gets better! Try your best to get them out before it gets too bad or else it is extremely hard to get rid of them. I think some pest control companies specialize in getting rid of fleas in your house. Good luck!

  • Uck!!  I don't have much advice for you either.  Maybe contact your vet's office to see what they say....

Hopefully you get rid of them fast!
