Neutering

My puppy is getting neutered tomorrow...I really don't know what to expect in terms of recovery. Will he have a cone, will he feel bad at all, any restrictions. About how many days will this all last. Anything special I should get to help him?

Re: Neutering

  • When SoBoh got neutered, the vet said no swimming/baths for 10 days (maybe two weeks...) and to try to avoid steps with him as much as possible.  We were in a TH at the time so we only took him up the steps at the end of the night with us to sleep, we kept him downstairs the rest of the time.  He was pretty out of it the first day or two, then just sort of wiped, and then he was fine - but our vet said to be easy with him even when he seemed fine, just to make sure he fully recovered.

He did not have a cone but he also didn't bother the incision/stitches.  The vet said that if he seemed to be bothering it we would get him a cone, but he was fine.

  • I don't know what size or age your puppy is- but he might not be phased at all.  Your vet will/should give you a list of restrictions/guidelines of what to expect.

When we had our dog fixed, he was 7 or 8 months I think, he was not put in a cone, and he didn't have issues w/ licking or biting the area.  We took him in and then I went to work for a half day (it was the day before Thanksgiving) and when I went and picked him up, they started telling me that he might be lethargic, etc. and then the woman who brought him from the back (and he was pulling her the whole way) was like, well, I guess that doesn't apply to him. It was literally like nothing had happened.

  • Strange timing--ours is getting spayed tomorrow. Thanks for thinking to ask this question. :)
