jennic22:Tonight: Buying the clear coat/sealer
(whatever its called) to finish up the nursery furniture.
Will you tell me about your experience painting the furniture? What type of sealer are you getting? I've posted about it before, but I've been painting a couple small cabinets for the basement, and the paint has been finicky and has taken forever to dry. I'm finally putting a coat of poly on them now, but it's kind of trial and error. I'm going to be painting a larger dresser soon, so I'm still trying to figure out the best method and would love to hear how it worked out for you!
Re: ~~JenniC~~
You'll have to bear with me, because this is H's grand plan & I'm kind of just along for the ride (he mixes up the paint & puts a brush in my hand and that's all the decision making that I've been doing). I don't know what we're getting for the sealer yet, but I can let you know tomorrow.
We started out with painted furniture with some sort of sealer on the top surface of the dressers. We roughed up the stuff that was sealed, but didn't really do much to the sides & such.
We got just a basic primer (tinted) and let that dry overnight. Then a layer of 'undercoat' (we're doing a faux wood finish, so we needed two colors), dry overnight, second layer of undercoat, dry overnight.
We mixed the 'top coat' with glaze (if you want to know what it is I'll have to ask DH tonight) so that it made the texture a lot thinner and almost slippery-er. Did a layer of top coat, dry o/n, layer of top coat, dry o/n. Then another thin layer & used our fancy wood grain tool.
That was on Friday night & because we went out of town left it to dry over the weekend. We haven't bought the sealer yet, so I'm not sure what that is. We definitely noticed that it was a little sticky at times, but we didn't have any trouble putting subsequent layers on - maybe because of the glaze? We were thinking the stickiness had a lot to do with how humid it was last week & we were doing this all in the garage - although maybe not since you're having trouble too.
I'll definitely let you know how it turns out after the clear coat in a couple of days, too.
Definitely let me know how it turns out! I'm just doing primer, paint, and poly (no glaze or anything). I've been painting mine inside the house since it's so humid outside, which is why the tackiness of the paint is baffling me. We even set our dehumidifier right next to the cabinets while drying, but it doesn't seem to help.
( I've been working on them slowly for a week or two now, but if I press my fingernail into the cabinet, it still leaves a mark. Granted, I'm using satin-finish paint and should probably be using semi-gloss or gloss, but still....I don't want to set something on it down the road, and have it pull paint off when I lift it up.
I'm using "wipe-on poly", which was recommended in a couple blogs I've been reading. It definitely goes on really easily and I don't have to worry about brush-strokes, so that is nice. I'm really hoping that it will dry and harden to create a better "shell" over the cabinets. We shall see!

Mommy's little helper
Yep, painting a HUGE dresser yellow, and this is my hesitation too! I have about a dozen yellow paint swatches in my basement, waiting for me to pick one. If I screw it up, I'm going to have a 6ft dayglo dresser, lol. I would definitely suggest grabbing every yellow swatch and taking them home with you though....the lighting inside HD/Lowe's is TOTALLY different from "normal" lighting, so I wouldn't pick it in the store. I'll try to remember to let you know what I pick once I decide!
