How long can I expect to be unemployed?

I've been unemployed for a MONTH now!  I am going out of my mind.  Seriously.  I am so bored.  My house has never been cleaner!  I just don't know how much more of this I can handle.  I worked in marketing, at a director level.  Any thoughts on how long it's going to take to find a job?

Re: How long can I expect to be unemployed?

  • It depends, where do you live, are you looking, do you have a good network?

     Good luck!

At the senior level I've heard it takes longer (6 months or so) but I think it depend on your local job market and your skills. There really is know to way to know how things will work out specific ally for you.

    Best of luck.

  • I've heard that a good estimate is to expect one month for every $10k that you expect to make.  Take that with a grain of salt, though.

  • No one can answer that question for you. It depends on so many factors, as the pp noted.

there are people on here who would kill to only be unemployed for a month.

  • I agree that it's different for everyone. I have been unemployed 7 months and I'm currently awaiting an offer I intend to accept. I had an offer in February (2 months in) and one in June (6 months in) that I turned down, as I'm very focused on finding the "right" job.

I think the time you're unemployed is directly related to the time you put in. I've pounded the pavement with over 100 individual networking meetings, tons of networking events, volunteering and applying for nearly 100 jobs.

I totally understand your boredom, though. My house is so clean, dinner is on the table and I HATE it. I'm so ready to go back to work, too. Hang in there. Keep yourself motivated, meet with people who care for you and support you, and keep your head up!

  • Do not give up.

It depends on your local job market, I was UE for a year and 3 months, After 9 months I started looking at other cities. I had the higher income and potential of higher income, I found a job in another city that didn't pay for relocation either, but it was still worth it for us to move. I am coming up in my one year anniversary next month.  I love my new job, I work with a great company, I have a wonderful boss, and the promotion and advancement oppurtinities are nothing like what I have would have had if I was still employed at my old job. As cliche as it sounds, everything happens for a reason!

In this economy there are people who have been out of work for more than 99 weeks, that's almost 2 years.  They have been in the news recently b/c their unemployment has run out.

I'd volunteer somewhere if you are that bored just to get out of the house.

    This exactly.

I've been unemployed for over a year since I moved for my H's job.  It sucks not working, but I try to keep my head up and stay busy doing other things in the meantime.

    Good luck.

  • I've been wondering the same thing.  I was also in a marketing director position and it's been about 6 weeks and I just had my first interview last week.  I have a fairly good network (thanks last job!!) to some high level people in large companies throughout my city but it's still tough.  I'm going bored out of my mind too - My goal for this week is to find some volunteering opportunities.

I was unemployed for 6 months and the work I found wasn't full time so I work two part time jobs. It sucks too but you got to do what you got to do.
  • Unfortunately in this economy, it could be a while.

Lots of Americans have been unemployed for a year or more.  I recently heard that the "real" unemployment number (including people who have given up looking for work, or are working part-time/temp jobs) is almost 23% of the workforce!  YIKES!

Like previous posts said, besides just job-hunting and cleaning 24/7, you can also do things like volunteer or work a part-time/temp job (if you can find one) to help fill your time.

I know though that it's pretty much impossible to think about anything else when you are looking for work.

Good luck & keep us updated!! :)

  • When I was laid off, I did two things -- freelanced and volunteered.  Between the two, and spending time with DH and my dogs, taking care of the house, etc. I was definitely not bored.

I was out of work for 9 months but I was quite selective in where I applied.

  • That is truly relative, as the girls stated; location is a factor, industry, position. I have a dear friend that was unemployed for 1.5 years. She decided to go back to school and change careers altogether during that time, which was great for her since the school she attended also helped with job placement. So that is another option for you as well. Some of the ladies from my church started doing stuff from home, including myself. Which makes it a little easier since you're able manage your time. If you want I could give you a whole list of different companies, lol since it's super popular down here! So that might be something to consider while you keep applying to different places and will keep you from being bored. lol  But ultimately its all about what you want and what you like/love. Look at the bright side you get to meet all of us :-)

    Have a great one!!

  • Only a month?  Wow!  I was unemployed for 9 months.  Fortunately I had enough money saved to get me through it.  I realized that I couldn't depend on an employer to take care of me for the rest of my life.  My business is going great!
