I'm looking for a laptop under 1k that is not a Mac. While I love them, I just can't afford one. It's my first laptop, so I'm not really sure what to get.
I want one that can run Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, and LightRoom all at the same time and possibly play some games with good graphics like Source Engine games. DH is thinking either a Dell Inspirion 14r or a Sony Vaio. Honestly I'm shopping like a girl and am drawn to the pearly whiteness of the Vaio. lol But really, I do want a keyboard that I can pound on with my long nails, it doesn't need to be big - maybe a 14 inch screen. I also want a good battery life and one that doesn't run really hot.
Re: Laptop other than a MacBook?
I haven't heard many good things about Dell.
And I'll warn you that the attractiveness of Sony Vaios is the very thing that makes them overpriced, unfortunately.
I adore my lenovo (they bought IBM). I've literally hauled it around the world in a backpack and never had any problems with it. It's a workhorse.
I wouldn't spit on DH's Dell if it was on fire. Total junk.
I think no matter what you get, you need to budget for the extra warranty coverage. I had so many problems with my old macbook that even AppleCare is essential. All companies will charge you a couple hundred for 3-4 years of coverage (and a little more if you get coverage for spills).
I normally agree that Dells aren't good machines. That said... I just got one. I'm happy with my Dell XPS15 running windows 7. It's very fast. Windows 7 has crashed a few times already in a couple of months, but that's not Dell's fault. I've just been spoiled by my old macbook.
My BIL has had 4 HP laptops, all of which died within a couple of years, so their quality isn't always great. Vaios are nice, but as PPs said, overpriced.
DH is a sound engineer so he runs large programs and is a gamer when he has free time. He just bought a MSI laptop and lovvvvves it.
If you're going with HP you really need to check the specs and go with one of their higher end models.
Dells still crap.
And honestly, you'd have to pry my macbookpro from my cold dead fingers. I've NEVER had an issue with it and it's 4 y/o. Still runs like new, and I run CS3 on it (hopefully I'll upgrade to 5 soon).
