Hey BH,
I've found some banners/badges that I like. A few questions:
1. Does InDesign or Illustrator work in layers, like Photoshop? e.g. could I find a background that I like, then layer one of these badges over it: http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illustration-10016239-ornamental-labels.php?st=c5d22ac)
2. In that example above, I assume I need to make the blue piece a transparent layer, yes?
3. Will these resize in a way that has a good enough resolution that I can print it? I'm not used to print resolution, but I know it has to be much higher dpi than web...
Thanks!

Hi there!
1. Yes, both use layers, but I find Illustrator's layers to be a little easier to use for this kind of thing.
2. I don't know how this file is set up, but if they did it using layers (that's how I would have done it), you should be able to either hide or delete the blue background if you don't want it. is that what you mean?
3) yes, that's the great thing about Illustrator files is that the vector based art can be resized as big or small as you want it. now if you were to import a jpg that was only 72dpi and tried to blow that up, it wouldn't work. But this says you can edit it with Illustrator so you should be fine.
