Help--need to get gum out of clothes!

DH washed a load of clothes and left a pack of gum in his pockets. I could kill him--he never empties pockets. The clothes were washed and dried. Gum was all over the dryer, but washed right off. The entire load has white gummy spots all over it. It almost looks like lint with a stickiness to it. I tried to scratch it off, and put it in the freezer, with no luck. Im not sure if I should rewash it, or if that will make it worse? Help!

Re: Help--need to get gum out of clothes!

  • For small bits of gum, try the brown paper trick.  Place a piece of brown paper (paper grocery bag without writing) on the ironing board, put garment, stain side down on the board and piece of cloth on top of the board.  Heat iron to medium. Press warm iron on the layered stack, the gum should come off on the brown paper.   Repeat until most of the gum is gone then launder clothes again in the hottest setting allowed by the clothes manufacturer.

This works for small stains but not big wads.

  • I just did this.  Goof Off (or Goo Gone) got it out, then I rewashed. Terpentine or mineral spirits will do the same.
