background checks

Hi all,

I am coming out of lurking to post my question. So TIA so much!!!!

My husband interviewed for a large gov't company for two positions. They called him last week to ask if he was offered a job, would he be able to start in 3-4 weeks and to ask him about his work history b/c they were doing a background check..His application status has since moved to interview complete, under consideration by hiring dept... for both postions. The stuatus before that was under consideration by department.

Is anyone familiar with which part of the process do large corporations compelete background checks. Why is he under consideration for two positions..that makes me question how many other people are also under consideration? Is that the last step of the process before being offered a position? I was told that they hire private firms to do the background check.. so if they are willing to invest money in that, then its just a matter of time before an offer is made, right?

thanks for reading my long rambling post. As a teacher, the big corporation stuff is foreign to me..plus its out of state, so I am slightly anxious. WDYT?

Re: background checks

  • I am familiar with the state government hiring process at the compny I work for right now and my first job. When I recommend someone for hiring, that's when our HR contacts the company that does the background check.  As a hiring manager I can only recommend one individual, if the background check comes back ok, we start the official offering of the salary and negotiation. If that falls through, then we moved on to the next best candidate, otherwise we don't spend the time and effort to do a background check on someone we may not make an offer, that's what an interview is for. I believe this is a very standard practice. Unless there are several openings with the same job title, only one person gets considered at a time.

Thank you so much for your feedback!! How long does it take to do a typlically background check.. he will have a "boring" background check...we are not concerned about it at all.

  • Your welcome. Depending on the position if it's just a simple criminal back ground check it will take 3-4 days. If the job requires a credit check (some of our positions deal with handeling money and payments) that will take an extra day. One thing that holds up the background check at times is the degree verification and employment history, specially if the company no longer exist, the norm is a week to two weeks. My own background check took 4 weeks, because I had a degree from an overseas univeristy and they needed to verify that.

As a teacher, didn't you have to have a background check done? I had to be fingerprinted at my state's Atty Gen office.
