anyone ever lay down ceramic tile?

i'd like to replace our carpeting in our finished basement with a hard surface. i wanted to do stained concrete but it looks like a lot for a DIY project and way too expensive to hire someone.

how hard is laying tile? is it as big a pain as it looks? fortunately we won't have to do a cement backer board since it's on concrete. i'm wondering if it might be something we could tackle on our own.

thoughts?

Re: anyone ever lay down ceramic tile?

  • H did our small bathroom a couple of years ago.  After he was done he said he'd never lay tile again.  It looks great, but he had problems with some of the cuts.  If you do it, I'd make sure you research and have the proper tools.  The salesman said we could use a certain saw since it was a small job, but he ended up breaking a few tiles trying to cut them.  Looking back we should have rented a wet saw.  It's doable though if you all have the time and patience.  I think my H has forgotten about how much he hated it, because now he's talking about tiling the kitchen.  :)
  • LOL about your h. yeah i think we'd have to rent a wet saw from HD.

  • i have not...but the thought of doing the cement stuff that sticks it to the ground (really techincal, huh!?) makes me SUPER nervous. you have to have the trowel at the right angel, you can't squish the tiles down too much, just enough, etc. i dunno...freaks me out.

more power to ya if you do do it!

  • My H helped do a friend's bathroom. They didn't think it was all that hard, but they did have the wet saw. They're both fairly handy in general too so that probably helped them.
