Shuttle launch

Re: Shuttle launch

  • Nope.  Wasn't aware of it.....I failed at watching the news this week.

  • It's the final mission.  Lifting off shortly.

  • I totally forgot. I've got it on now. What time is the actual launch?

  • Absolutely watched it!  Kind of hard to miss it around here though  :)  Beautiful, but sad.  The United States no longer has the ability to put people into space.

We have some pretty awesome  private companies that have some promising stuff coming along, but it will still be quite a while.

  • We just watched it down in our conference room. Pretty cool stuff.

One girl walked in as the clock stopped at 31, and was like WHY ARE THEY STOPPED?!?! We told her to take a deep breath the countdown would start again. There are smart people running the show and they won't lose their place.

  • It really was neat to watch.  It almost makes me wish I could have seen it live in person, but I guess online is the next best thing.

  • We were lucky this morning because we turned the news on for breakfast (8:30ish CA time) not knowing the shuttle was launching today, and it was counting down from 1:30.  It was pretty incredible - I'm glad I was not there in person though, the observers looked like their ears were exploding!

I don't find the "last mission" sad, I find it exhilarating because the US is now moving on to greater and more challenging endeavors, I am eager to see what is next!

  • I find the end or an era sad, even if it is bringing newer and better things its way, especially when I have had some involvement in the Shuttle, and I also know a lot of people that are very heavily involved in the Shuttle program.

But the really sad part is that we currently have no space program vision for our country, we dont even have a planned architecture, much less something that will be here in the near future.  And politics is determing our future rather than science.  We will totally be depending on the Russians for all space needs for quite a long time.

When the decision to scrape the shuttle program was made, we did have a vision and an exploration mission for the future.  Many years and lots of money had been spent on it, so ending the shuttle made sense.  But then a few years ago that vision was thrown out the window.

There are many people losing jobs over the end of the program as well, mostly people in Houston and Florida, not so much here.  But the complete lack of any space mission planning for our country has directly affected me and many people that I work with, and has caused more job losses beyond the ones driectly lost by the end of the Shuttle program.

So really, right now, other than the really awesome commercial stuff being done (that is a ways off, and would have been done with the shuttle still in commission anyways) we have no exciting future for the US space program.

  • Funny I just talked to my dad a few minutes ago and he's already in Daytona before we get there tomorrow, and he said he saw it from the beach he's at! He had no idea it was happpening but it was cool he saw it.

  • I was able to watch it in person. My mom has a coworker who owns a condo across the river from the launch pad. She said it was awesome seeing it so close.
