Mommas, re: furniture

My month board has a thousands of ladies it seems like.  I figured you ladies would help me narrow this down easier.  What brand do you like for nursery furniture?  Where did you get it?  In your experience, is buying a matching set with a convertible crib worth the extra money?  (I'm thinking it is, but my concern is quality/wear and tear and having to buy more furniture later anyway.)  Thank you!!

Re: Mommas, re: furniture

  • We bought B's crib from USA Baby, it is Munire Newport in Espresso - http://www.munirefurniture.com/newport_01.htm.  We converted it to a toddler bed and he used it for a bit, then I got pregnant and we moved him to a twin so we could re-use the crib for #2.  It's held up really well and is very sturdy.  We've been really pleased with it.

We also have a glider in his room - it's made by Best Chair (also from USA Baby) and is SOO comfy.  A comfy glider was huge for me, I spent a ton of time in it when I was up at night feeding him.

For us, it was worth the money - #2 will keep this set and we'll eventually convert it to a full size bed for her.

  • Our crib is actually from Walmart, gasp, I know. It had excellent reviews from consumer reports. I will have to look at the name when I get home. It is a more modern style than traditional style. The crib only converts to a toddler bed. We decided we didn't want a forever bed. C nor I thought we would want L to have the same bed throughout his childhood. We bought a rocker, but I wouldn't buy one again. I haven't used it other than to hold clothes and toys.
  • I forgot to add that we bought the hemnes dresser from IKEA. It is his dresser and changing table. We are happy with this dresser for the next few years.
  • We got the Graco Lauren in espresso from Amazon.com.  It convert to a toddler bed and I *think* you can use the back part of the crib as a headboard later on.  DH and I didn't want to purchase a set of furniture that would grow with LO so early.  We decided to get a cheaper crib and then when Wyatt is older he can help pick out the furniture he will use as he grows.

ETA: The chair we have in his room is a rocker/recliner that our friends were going to toss when they moved.  It was in perfect condition so they gave it to us so they wouldn't have to move it.  Our dresser is the Davinci Piedmont Changer Chest that we also got from Amazon.  Again, we didn't want to spent a ton of money and this seemed good for the price and we figure it will last a few years.

  • We got the DaVinci Kalani crib and like it a lot so far. It's a convertible, so you can eventually make it into a toddler bed.

Changing table: Badger Basket on Amazon. It's relatively inexpensive and he doesn't need an armoire yet, so I figure I'll use that for a while and then get something more permanent without a changing feature.

The rocker is from BRU (I forget the name, but I listed it in my nursery link in siggy) and I like that a lot also. I didn't envision him planting his feet on one side of it to squirm away, but hey. :) I've fallen asleep in it a few times and it's very comfortable.

Oh, you asked about matching sets--I just picked out everything in 'espresso', which is more or less the same in all furniture brands. It might be off a shade or two, but nothing to make any real difference, and certainly not to a boy.

  • We bought out crib from JCPenneys. It converts to a toddler and then a full. We will most likely only use for a toddler bed as we already have a queen size bed in her room too.

We are using a dresser we bought from furniture consignment store for just over $100 and repainted it. We are using this for the changing table too.

We bought a rocker/recliner from Lazyboy. It was alittle more procey than the ones from Babys R Us but we got it to match our living room furniture so we can move it out there once she gets older. I am actually using it in the living room right now because it is not comfortable for me to sit on the couch.

  • We got the Davinci Kalani convertible crib, 5 drawer dresser, changing table and hutch...no glider or recliner.

We envision James using this all for a while.  I like the convertible feature and doubt he'll be very picky in the future about it.  Even if we get him new furniture when he's 10, I'd say 10 years is good use out of it.  So far everything's held up really well.

Right now I don't remember where we got it.  It was some on-line site.  We knew which set we wanted and did price searching from there, getting at the cheapest place.

  • I found our furniture on Craig's List for 200.00!  I got the changing table and the crib from one woman whose daughter had outgrown them.  The crib is DaVinci.....it has a drop-down side, *gasp* but it is in really good shape and very sturdy.  Both are oak colored.

It's a Munire set I'm liking best so far.  "Urban."  Also, the local baby store, Storkland, has a Best Chair.  It feels sooo cozy.  But it's around $800-900 for the chair and ottoman.  I'm gonna try to find one cheaper online.

  • We got the Baby Cache Royale collection from BRU and we love it. It came packaged incredibly well and has held up insanely awesome :) Addy is still in her crib, but we also purchased the conversion kit to change to a toddler bed, day bed (basically toddler without the rails) and to a full size. We also got the match dresser and changing table/dresser. I absolutely love it. We waited for one of their semi annual sales so we got the entire set for something like $1300 which was a great deal, in our opinion, because we are planning on using it for the long run :)

  • We have the Delta Canton convertible and I really like it so far. Availabl at target but it was cheaper on amazon (and extended my amazon mom / prime services!) so that's where we ordered it from. I love the cherry/mahogony color. It does have a couple of minor scratches from moving, but from the reviews that I've read it holds up better than a lot of the options. Our changing table was built by FIL and DH and stained to match, and someone gave us a glider. Love love love having a glider! I use it all the time.
