New fur baby

I just *just* got internet back (literally 2 minutes ago, the installer hasn't even left yet) and I feel like so much has happened in the past week.

More crazy house things happened besides last weekend that I posted about, but I'll spare you the details.

But we got a dog. I was on petfinder.com looking through the shelters near us and the two closest to us didn't really have anything I was interested in. I went to the website of another shelter and saw the listing for a beautiful Akita boy with a happy smile. It said he was 5 years old and was having a tough time recently. He was picked up as a stray, and upon his initial inspection they found that he had an inside out lower eyelid (bilateral entropian) and had heartworms.

I felt sorry for him, and he's so handsome that I had to meet him. So DH and I discussed it over dinner and the next morning I was going to go adopt him. I got to the shelter and right away told them that I was there to see Bear (very appropriate name, they gave it to him at the shelter). The receptionist said that he was a volunteer favorite and told me exactly where to find him. Walking down the row at the shelter was so absolutely heartbreaking, all those little faces. And it being that time of the month, I was a little emotional anyways. So I came up to Bear's cage, which was at the end of the row... and immediately burst into tears. (Embarrassing!!)

So I got in the room with him, and he is just so abnormally laid back. He wasn't jumping on me and wasn't really interested in the toys in the room (but he was in the treats) and he would let me pet him, but just kinda loped around the room. He was really perfect for us because we didn't want a puppy, we didn't want a dog with that kind of energy, So it was confirmed that I would take him home.

They wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into before I took him home. After he was picked up he had surgery for his eyelid and got the arsenic-based treatment for the worms. A month after the first heartworm treatment he still tested positive for the heartworm larvae (microfilia). So he got an injection of the stuff that's the active ingredient in Heartguard that's supposed to kill the microfillia. That was a month ago. They told me that a few families were interested in him, but when they found out that part they bailed out. So even though for his sake, that scares the crap out of me, he's such a nice dog that I still took him home.

I have an appointment Friday to get him tested again, and since I adopted him the shelter is footing the bill for the visit. So here's to hoping he's all cleared.

He's so perfect, he's great with other dogs, and kids, and other people, and NOTHING fazes him (except the storm going on right now, he won't come downstairs to eat dinner). He hasn't barked yet, and (knock on wood) hasn't potty'd on the floor yet. He's such a good boy.

  • I big puffy heart love anyone who adopts from a shelter.  Good job!  He looks like such a sweet boy and seems to be smiling in the first picture!

Going to a shelter is so hard and I cry everytime.  Here's to no worms for Bear!

    Do the creep.
  • He is just beautiful! My mom has an Akita (Kiba is her name) and she is so sweet and is so faithful to my mom!

Congrats on the perfect find and for giving an adorable guy another chance at a happy life and home! We have 4 pets (2 dogs, 2 cats) and all of them are from the shelter.  Rescue pets rock!

  • Congrats on the new addition!  I hope he is healthy on Friday.  Keep us updated on how he is doing!

  • Awwww, you made me cry!  I am so glad that you adopted him; he could not have found a more perfect home!  Your story of other families backing out just tugged my heart strings, since our Zeke had gone to 4 trial adoption weekends with 4 different families and was returned to the rescue each time because of his special paw.  But, I guess those families passing our puppies up was good for us because we get to be the special people in their lives!

Here's to hoping Bear is worm-free!  He just looks like a sweetie!

  • Thanks guys. I totally <3 him, but I kinda hated him when he got away from me the other day and I had to RUN after him four blocks barefoot. I got him an appointment for 2pm Friday, I'll keep you posted on his wormy status.

  • He is so cute and sounds like the perfect addition to your family. Adoption shelters are so hard. It makes you want to take everyone home. DH tells me that if he allowed it we would have a pack of dogs in our house :) Our dog was a rescue and he had been one of the best choices we have made together.
Good luck with the running away. Ru was a bolter at first it slowly got better but there were some rough months. He now is very good (most of the time) at listening to the stay and leave it command.

  • What a beauty!  I really hope his health situation checks out, and I bet it will, because TLC is often the best cure for shelter pets, I swear!

We got two kittens about a month ago, and one was this listless little runt, and he had no kitten energy; I was so worried, and the other had a bad leg from a another cat biting him on the mean streets of SF!  But now they are both happy, cuddly, and CRAZY!  And I think part of that was because they have gone to a warm, loving home, and receive mounds of positive attention each day.

I bet your doggy will improve with you and DH to watch over him.  He sounds like quite a find.  Congrats!  He really is just gorgeous.

  • He is so CUTE!!!  Congrats doggies are the best!
  • Congratulations!! Hopefully everything check out just fine, he sounds so sweet!!
