Another random question - highlights

I was wanting to get some highlights but I have never done it before and I have no idea where to go or what to ask for! Do they do a consultation before or do I just call and schedule an appt ?  I noticed on a lot of sites there are partial and full highlights, I don't know what the difference is! I need a change! Thanks!

Re: Another random question - highlights

  • Usually they will consult with you before they start to find out exactly what you are wanting done. I usually get my consult right before they do my hair so not at a separate time. If you know you want to get highlights just tell them that when you schedule so they will allot enough time for your process.

Full highlights means they do highlights all over your head. Partial would be like just doing a few highlights around your face and the crown of your head but not all over. You also have the option of doing different colors. More than one color will cost more.

If you aren't sure of what you want I would take in a few pictures of examples of what you like and they can tell you if or how you can achieve it.

  • Lacey hit on most of it, just wanted to chime in w/ my experience since I've been highlighting and lowlighting for a LONG time and have gone to tons of different places so this is kind of an area of expertise. ;)

I always choose to go for partial highlights.  Not only do I love that it saves money, but it really looks a lot better in my hair. I have very thick hair and the underneath portion of my hair would never highlight naturally by the sun, so I don't like to do it unnaturally. If I highlight the whole thing, it looks streaky when pulled up in a ponytail.  You will still get plenty of natural looking color if you go for the partial.

When saving money on the partial, I would definitely suggest doing at least 2 colors in our hair, and asking for very thin section (at least if you are going for the natural look).  In the summer I do 1 foil of bleach (the lightest option) and 1 foil of a light blonde dye.  In the winter I do the lighter blonde dye and a darker carmel color.  I always have the 2 different foil colors intermixed w/ my own natural color of hair.  This was I can go  a long time between highlights and the outgrowth always looks fine.
