Buying a car (any recs...Hyandai or Honda) + hybrid incentives?

I've been doing way too much research on cars. I live near Accokeek, but am willing to travel to test drive if possible. Someone locally rec'd the Honda Insight, which is a hybrid. I was kinda hoping to not go that route, but I may consider it if I like how it drives.

I am looking at the Insight, Civic HF, or maybe a Hyandai Elantra. The key is finding a dealer that has one for me to test :) Does anyone have any recs for a car dealer?

Second question - Anyone know if there are any tax incentives or reduced fees that go along with the purchase of a hybrid in MD?

Third - Does it matter if I purchase in MD versus VA? I may even be moving back to NOVA in a few months, so is it cheaper to purchase there (as far as taxes, title, etc) go versus MD?

TIA!

Re: Buying a car (any recs...Hyandai or Honda) + hybrid incentives?

  • I have a Hybrid (Toyota Highlander) but we bought it used so I'm not sure of any tax incentives out there, but I seem to recall there being some for brand new vehicles when I did my taxes this year.

I also have Hyundai Elantra (2002 model). I love it, it's been a good little car for me, and I actually like the redesign of the newer models more than mine. The warranty is FAB.

Both of our cars were bought at Fitzgerald Auto Mall - the Gaithersburg location. I know they have Hyundai and Toyota at that location, not sure about Honda. You can look at their inventory online and we've always found them to be very helpful.

And it doesn't matter what state you purchase in - taxes, etc. are based on where you live, not where you buy.

This is true, although if you buy a car in MD, there was a new law passed that allows them to put an additional fee on for administrative costs earlier this year (it is $200).

  • Re: Taxes: When I moved to VA, I had purchased my car that year in MD and since I had paid taxes (and had the proof), I was exempt from the first year of car tax.

Here is the code link, it is #10

If you purchase the car in VA, you pay the tax to MD. The dealer can handle it for you.

Oh, and I think there are some Federal tax credits when you purchase a hybrid. It use to be around 4K.

I have an Elantra, and DH does too. My ma has a Sonata. We used to do Honda's, but we all have been so happy with Hyundai that we're total converts. We all bought at Fairfax Hyundai and they are great there.

I don't answers to any of your other questions though :)

Have you thought about a Chevy Cruze?  I rented one this weekend (so obviously not the best-taken-care-of car in the world) and it was fantastic.  Felt well put together, the gas mileage was AWESOME (never fell below 37, and I got 40+ by the time I got to my destination), and I think they're pretty reasonably priced, not to mention loaded with features.  If I was in the market for a new car, I'd get one.  The mileage is almost as good as a hybrid, and it's significantly cheaper.

  • My nephew and my mom both have Honda civics.  The rest of our friends seem to have the Honda Fit!

We are buying a car probably this year.  We liked the Chevy Sonic hatchback, ford focus 2012 hatchback, Nissan Versa, and Kia Soul for small cars.  We go to car shows every year

  • I'm anti Chevy (I owned one previously) and anti Kia (know too many people who work in car insurance claims for accidents).

Thanks for the recs though! I've pretty much narrowed my list, thank God :)
