Pressing Seams "Poll"

Hi ladies!

I am working on a t-shirt quilt for my sister and am trying to decide how to press the seams. In the past I have pressed toward the darker color and on a recent quilt I pressed the seams open.

Do you press your seams?

How would you press them on a t-shirt quilt with sashing?

Re: Pressing Seams "Poll"

  • I press mine open. Easier to sew that way.

I'd probably press them open, or maybe towards the sashing in your case.

  • I learned to press towards the darker color too. My quilting instructor taught me to do it that way, so who am I to question? :-)
  • I press toward the darker color.
  • For quilts I always press in one direction for all the blocks as I sew (which usually means half the block goes one way and half the other, which makes for good seam matching when I sew the halves together), but I've never paired fabrics of drastically different shades.

I think for a t shirt quilt I'd press the seams open, just because of how the fabric is.

  • I used to only press towards the darker color, but once I started quilting, I learned that it's way easier to quilt on tops where the seams are pressed open. It's easier to line up points when pressing to one direction or the other, but you get a much smoother, uniform looking top when it's all pressed open. I bought the Clover fork pins to help and they are the BEST!

  • I always press open. The blocks end up flatter, and maybe I'm just a bad presser, but I always "lose" fabric pressing to one side (like, it doesn't press right at the seam...).
