Dog Tag Bracelet...

While out and about today I saw a girl who took her husbands dog tag and turned into a bracelet...now I thought this was a cute and different idea but im curious....what do you all think...tasteful and cute..or cheesy and tacky?

Re: Dog Tag Bracelet...

  • Do you know why military members are issued dog tags?

  • I don't think it is cute nor do I think I could wear that without being totally creeped out.  A friend of mine has a name for people who wear stuff like this as if it were some fashion statement.  She calls them "boot wives".

This. I've never understood dog tags as a fashion accessory given what their real function is.

Even in the 90's when it was the "cool" thing for guys to wear, I didn't get it but, that was before I even knew what they were for.

  • I'm on the tacky train as well.  However, if DH gave me one, I would accept it graciously.  It would just take up permanent residence in my jewelry box.

Yep, I'd put it with my "Marine Wife: Toughest Job in the Corps" key chain. I usually look at those and assume that it's somebody who has recently started dating or married a military member.

  • I do understand why they're issued. I just think if you feel the need to sport your boyfriend/husbands dog tag its better to be creative about it than to just let it hang around your neck...now dont get me wrong you wont catch me rockin one anytime soon..I just appreciate her effort to do something a lot of people do in a different way.
  • I will never understand the phenomenon of wearing your SO's dog tags. It's like printing your SSN on your shirt and asking for identity theft, not to mention it almost always signals that your husband/wife is deployed. It's basically a necklace (or bracelet) that says "Hey creeper, follow me home! And while you're at it, I'm wearing enough information on my person for you to steal my SO's identify without much effort at all."

All in all, probably not a good plan. And it looks tacky.

  • I hope Stan gets 5 dog tags.

  • I think it's tacky. I'm facebook friends with a girl who's fiance was deployed with mine and she wore his 24/7. She edited a picture to say "you wear dog tags as a fashion accessory, I wear them to keep him close to my heart." Creepy!

I appreciate that you want all my extremities identifiable!

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • At first glance I'd assume it was a medic alert bracelet.

I wouldn't say tacky, just stupid.  But I feel that way about probably any military style garb.  It's not like H wears a stethoscope to feel closer to me (as though I'm defined by my job).

  • I would say tacky and creepy.  I don't want to be reminded every time I look at my wrist of what could happen to H while on deployment.  That is something that I am fully aware of without a bracelet to remind me.

Also wearing around something with SSN on it is just asking for trouble.

  • I support my h 100%, but not through accessories. I find people who are wearing dog tags as fashion jewelry or cammo purses are not as much supporting their Hs as being attentionwhores. Just my experience. Totally tracky

  • Meh. I personally wouldn't do it (on my own, anyway, I'd of course rock one once in a while if DH got it for me), but that's just me. I tend to jump to the conclusion that women who wear those sorts of things are married to or dating guys who recently graduated boot camp (or maybe they just got together themselves).I have a very good friend whose husband gave her a set of dog tags to keep when he left for his first deployment. She still wears them off and on, and he just finished his third tour. So it's not entirely a "boot wife" thing, yet I still see it on women and go, "Hmm?"

I bought a pair of (what I thought were) plain back exercise pants from the PX once, and when I got home and put them on I realized they had a tiny "Marines" on the top left by my hip. DH teased me relentlessly. lol The "motowear" thing just isn't either of our styles.

I tend to agree, as much as I hate to admit it because I know full well that's not everyone's intention. It just seems so weird to be walking advertisement for military wifery... My biggest pet peeve is seeing the "1/2 my heart is in Iraq/Afghnistan" bumper stickers. On a Marine Corps base. Like, yeah, yours and everyone else's, sweetie, who gives a crap?!"
