So after more than a year of being married, I decided to change my last name.
I'm expecting a big pain in the asss, so hopefully you can help me!
Do I go to the social security office first, and then DMV? Do I have to bring any forms filled out or anything besides ID, marriage license, proof of address, etc?
Also- did anyone drop their middle name and shift their maiden name over (first maiden new last)? Is there another step in this since it isn't just changing the last name?

I did the SS office first, then the DMV. I can't 100% remember, but I think at the DMV they asked for my SS card with my new name on it.
Also, I would add a book to the list-- I waited nearly 2 hours in the SS office and got yelled at for texting
So this will be as fun as I'm anticipating? Yes!
It doesn't matter what order you go in. I went to SS first and then immediately over to the DMV all in one day. I did not have a new SS card with me. All I brought was my old license and my marriage certificate. I think I brought my birth certificate for good measure but didn't need it.
A book is probably a good idea.

i did mine in 30mins. not a pain at all. went to ss in center city then dmv in chinatown.
i went middle of the week around 10/11 am
i shifted my maiden name they just ask you to write your new name down and bam done
The SS office and the DMV are the easy part! Then you've got your credit cards, banks, employer, passport, insurance (health, car, life), car title (if you own), car registration, loans (student, car, mortgage), any retirement plans/accounts or investments, doctors offices etc. etc. etc...I still haven't changed my name on everything. I deal with issues as they come up. The whole process is such a PITA!
the DMV does not accept cash. Only checks or money orders.
ah..thanks. I knew it was something funky.
