AW - Vacaaaatiooon!

We booked our trip to vegas and the grand canyon! I am beyond excited. This was originally going to be our honeymoon, but we decided we wanted more low-key and something shorter. I *never* went on vacation with my family, as money was always tight, and since getting together with DH, we've spent so much time/money between visiting my family and his races. Well he decided not to do his big race this year, and my family is coming HERE for Christmas.... so IT'S ON! Aside from a day trip to Niagara falls and our honeymoon in Savannah, this will be my only other vacation in my 27 years on this earth.  I pretty much can't think about anything else now that it's booked -- I'm like a giddy 5 year old.  Is it November yet?!?!?!?

  • So exciting! We're talking about going to Vegas next year for DH's 30th. Make sure you take lots of pics (like I have to tell you that...).

  • hahaha. I actually think I'm going to leave my big camera behind, which is SO PAINFUL... But while we're at the grand canyon I'm not going to want to carry it (we're doing the crazy "don't try this at home, kids" one-day hike, so the extra weight just seems like a bad idea), but you can bet I will use that as an excuse to upgrade the point-and-shoot between now and then!! ;)

  • I'm excited for you guys!  The Grand Canyon is on my list.
  • YAY!  I'm seriously SO EXCITED for you!  You'll have so much fun.
  • How exciting! I soooo want to go to Vegas! I've been to the Grand Canyon and it was fun for a few minutes. We got to the first overlook and its like "WOW! Big hole in the ground!" then the next was like "Wow, big hole in the ground." At the last overlook it was like "Yeah, okay, got it, big hole in the ground. I'm ready for lunch"

    But, it is pretty!

  • jen, i'm so so happy for you guys! and what a way to start a tradition - vegas and the grand canyon - two amazing places that i can't wait to go back to someday!

i'm no expert on either place but let me know if you have any questions with planning that i might be able to help with. ?

  • lol, Mana! I'm actually more excited for the grand canyon than I am Vegas, to be honest. You'd never know it since the heat turns me into an indoors-only type of girl, but I'm a total nature lover. I could sit on my back porch and watch our lake(puddle as of late) for hours. So I'm sure the grand canyon will keep me interested... plus hiking for an entire day won't hurt. haha

Thanks guys! I think we're set for now -- we have a basic itinerary set, and I guess this will be the test of whether I'm any good at planning a vacation. lol. Once we get closer I'll definitely be hitting you guys up for recs on where to eat etc.

  • So fun! I'm super excited for you! I went to the Grand Canyon in high school and it was AMAZING. And we just stayed at the top. I would love to back and hike one day. And I just went to Vegas for the first time in December.

You guys are going to have an awesome time!

  • That sounds like a blast! We've done Vegas, but really, after 2-3 days I'm over it. That's the perfect length of stay in the city, but I've always wanted to extend the trip to do the Grand Canyon & Hoover Damn. You guys are going to have so much fun! Where are you staying in Vegas? Any shows?

  • That's so awesome! You'll have a fantastic time. We'd love to go to the Grand Canyon and do a hike like that someday too.

We were in Vegas weekend before last and it was pretty fun, although I totally hear you on being more excited about the grand canyon. We didn't get that far on this trip though. We did go to red rock canyon, hoover dam, lake mead, and the valley of fire state park, and the valley of fire was my absolute favorite. It was gorgeous and had some great walking trails that weren't too long. I'd recommend it if you get the chance and are looking for more outdoorsy stuff.

  • We are definitely hitting the hoover dam on the way out to the grand canyon. We *may* do Lake Mead and/or Valley of fire (thanks for the tip -- I wasn't sure if that was worth doing) on the way back or a day trip on our last day (if we're over Vegas), but I really have a feeling we're going to be completely and utterly POOPED after the all-day hike. We're staying at the Tropicana, which judging by my research had been fairly rinky-dink and old, which I don't mind anyway, but they've just renovated and it's apparently much nicer. And they had an awesome deal through cheaptickets We have budgeted on a show but haven't decided which... judging by reviews, I have a feeling we'll see cirque's Mystere. We loved Allegria, and while we adore Blue Man, we are likely seeing them agian in orlando in December when my fam comes down... so that might be excessive. haha. I've only looked at the stationary shows so far, though.. I haven't looked into who/what might be travelling through yet.

  • I've stayed at the Tropicana post-reno (through a Southwest pkg thing) and it's totally fine plus what I think is a great location on the strip.

If you're considering a Cirque show, there's also O (my absolute favorite), Love (all Beatles music), and Ka (a very cool stage-mobile show) as well as others that I haven't seen.  Le Reve is not Cirque but Cirque-esque and is supposed to be very good too.  You can always buy tix ahead of time for one show and try to get them last minute at a discount for a second show when you're there if you have a free night.

  • Thumbs up on the Tropicana! I did hear that they recently renovated the rooms. The casino is very cheesy/old school, but we winded up spending a few hours there one night for $5 black jack tables and $3.50 beers. It's fun to hangout at the bars and experience all of the nicer casinos too, but I can only order so many $18 redbull vodkas at the Bellagio before I need to move on. Yes, if you're gambling they come by every so often and give free drinks, but at the nicer casinos, you really need to be at the pricey tables for that to happen. I could spend (and did spend) a whole night just wandering the strip and exploring the hotels though. They're so pretty and there's so much to see. I'm sure any of the Cirque shows will be cool. We saw Ka when we were there. It was very different from La Nouba (that we saw in Orlando) but still very cool.

  • Lake Mead might be fun if you were to do some boating. We stopped by one of the beaches, and other than the fact that the water was heaven since it was so hot that day, there's really not much to the beach. It's nothing compared to what jacksonville has. We then drove north through the park to get to valley of fire. The drive was scenic, but for most of it you couldn't even see the lake as the hills were in the way.
  • O seems pretty awesome.  We toyed with Zumanity, but then I read something about how it included "celebrating elderly sex" and that slammed the book shut on that one. I'm fairly open-minded and am fine with topless acrobats (I mean, the outfits don't leave much to the imagination as it is), but that's a little much for me. haha

  • Exciting!!  I hope you have a wonderful time!!
