Moms: Pedi Recs

Who is your pediatrician? We've had a few people recommend the Carithers Group, so I'm going to sign up for their orientation class next month, but I wanted to see if you guys had any good recommendations as well.

Side of town doesn't matter too much as long as it's not at the beach.

Thanks!

Re: Moms: Pedi Recs

  • Pookie recommended a group to me, so that's who we're using. Mostly because it's literally down the street and I don't want to be driving all over, but also because I trust her judgement :)

    From her email:

We go to Baptist Pediatrics on San Jose at Baymeadows. We see Dr. Tarbox.  She's young, in her 30s and very energetic.  We like her a lot.  There are several other doctors there to choose from as well.

  • I also go to Baptist Pediatrics on San Jose. We see Dr. Silberman. He is very reassuring and knowledgeable. I have been very impressed with him and the practice so far. I called in concerned about her spitting up last week, not only did the nurse speak with the dr and call me back, but she followed up two days later to see if H was getting better.

  • We use Progressive Pediatrics. I have been happy with them. They never seemed rushed when in with us. They listened to me when he was some weird stuff going on, I think most others would have wrote it off as worried first time mom. There was definitely something going on and she pin pointed it. Dr. Ceron has called us herself on 3 different occasions to check on him after appointments.
  • I'm following this thread too.  DH and I are ready to make a pedi change.  James was being seen at Dr. Mary's Place since birth but Dr. Mary has been wrong or misdiagnosed James on three different occasions.  We like Dr. Sarah, but when something comes up unexpectedly we're not guaranteed that James will see Dr. Sarah and I'm not willing to chance Dr. Mary again with James' health.

Do you mind if I ask details? We use Dr. Mary's too, and we've never had any problems (in fact, they're the ones who caught Jonathan's RSV infection), but I'd like to know if I should keep an eye out.

We try to use Dr. Sarah or Cara, the PRN. They both have been great, and Cara is great at taking her time with them.

Not at all.  I feel like Dr. Mary is always rushed and doesn't really listen.

    1. When James was born and still in the hospital, we had some trouble with him latching.  The lactation nurse noticed his tongue would fork when he cried, both those together had her suggest to us that his frenulum would probably need to be clipped.  We mentioned this to Dr. Mary when she came to visit at the hospital but she said no he's fine.  Our first visit to her after we left the hospital she said, 'oh my, looks like his frenulum needs to be clipped.'  We glossed over that one.

    2. James had a really bad, non-itchy rash back in February of this year.  Dr. Mary looked him over and automaticallly diagnosed him with scabies. Indifferent  I was so freakin embarrassed.  The diagnosis didn't make sense because Gary and I didn't have any rash issues, his rash wasn't itchy and she never tested him for a diagnostic, just eye-balled him.  We treated him with the cream required but he didn't get better after two weeks.  We took him back and Dr. Sarah said it definitely was NOT scabies and referred us to a pediatric dermatologist.  Fortunately, the rash went away on its own between the visit with Dr. Sarah and the derma.  Based on the pictures we showed the derma, she agreed that it was some kind of viral skin infection and it's very common that they go away on their own.  Not f'in scabies.

    3. In April we took James in because he started to refuse to walk.  Dr. Mary chalked it up to tantrums.  The daycare kept telling us, no something's wrong, which is what we felt too.  We took him back, saw Dr. Sarah and she started him on the tests and the specialist referrals that led to him being diagnosed finally with discitis and being interned at the hospital for a week last May.  Not once did Dr. Mary's office call us to check on James after that.  The specialists at Nemours and Wolfson's have been great though.

Based on all that, Dr. Mary gives me the impression that she doesn't take the time to look and listen, but feels that she's right, period.

Our favorite doctor is back in practice, she's out in Ponte Vedra near Sawgrass.

I heard!  I didn't switch at first because of location, but at this point she's a contender. =)

  • I'm so sorry you have been dealing with that with Dr. Mary's Place, Madisen :( I don't blame you for wanting to switch.

We've been through a number of pediatricians, my issue is that we found one we LOVED when B was a newborn and nobody has been able to measure up to her yet, so I keep switching trying to find someone like her.

Anyway, her name is Bonnie White, her office is out in Ponte Vedra near Sawgrass - http://www.pontevedramedical.com/doctors.html - and I 100% recommend her!

We also went to Dr. Soberano at St. Augustine Pediatrics, I wasn't a fan.  He was nice, the staff was great, but his philosophies just didn't mesh well with my parenting style.

We loved Dr. Sarah at Dr. Mary's Place, but my insurance changed and they don't accept the new insurance.

Now we're at the Carithers Group and so far I've been pleased.  I've only seen Dr. Shaw (for B's 3-year appt), but I liked her.  I've heard Dr. Kim is really great too, especially for newborns.   One of my friends works in the PICU at Wolfson's and recommended the practice to me.  We haven't had to see them for any issues yet, but hopefully they handle them well too :)

  • Holy crap, Madisen. I can't believe nobody bothered to follow up after finding out about discitis. That's just unconscionable.

We also use Progressive Pediatrics. It can, at times, be slow. But it's because they generally take a lot of time with each person. Each doctor--Dr Ceron and Dr Miles--has been very thorough and writes everything down they say to you and recommend. If they diagnose something, they offer you both natural and prescriptive solutions and let you pick which you are most comfortable with. I generally ask for both in case one isn't effective. I also appreciated their suggestions on how to get the swelling down on my own body after delivery and how to handle breastfeeding in the middle of the night, etc. There's a natural pharmacy next to them so you can pick up any natural solutions they might suggest like probiotics or vitamins (and they also encourage you to shop around for prices, so it isn't like you're obligated). There's also an LC in the building if you need one (love her) and my midwifery practice is there also (Fruitful Vine). The nice thing is, even if I don't need an appointment for myself, if I needed to take time out to nurse him or change him or just let him cool down before getting back in the car, I could pop into one of the birthing bedrooms over there and rock for a while.

  • We see Dr Elvir and Dr Monsalve at Village Peds (at WGV). I confess that I worked there PT for about a yr.  But, we were patients for almost 2 yrs when I started. They are both very patients with parents. The office runs on time and they will bend over backwards to get you a same day sick appt. (some offices require you to be "sick" for a couple days....)  Dr Elvir is into holistic too which I really like.

  • We use Dr. Mary's Place as well, and we've never had anything but good things. I'm so so sorry you had such issues with them Madisen and totally would have done the same thing. That's crazy.

We see Dr. Stanley at Dr. Marys, and also see Nurse Cara a good amount and Addy loves both of them.

To the OP, I know you mentioned that it doesn't really matter what side of town the docs is on, but from personal experience, I'd like to recommend finding one either close to your home, or close to work/daycare provider. That way, in case of an emergency you can get them to the doctor quickly. It also makes car rides with a vomiting child much much easier if you don't have to go too far :)

  • to be fair, i just spoke with dh and he said dr. mary visited james at wolfson's the day of or the day before he was released. i wasn't there at the time and forgot he told me that.  everything else i wrote stands.
  • We go to Pediatric Care Center off of Baymeadows and 9A. We see Dr Pitocchi, she's excellent. A little conservative, but I love her. I never seem to wait very long, the staff is friendly, and they are open 24/7!

  • I would like to add that all the times I have called Baptist Peds with concerns about DD's health (suspected chicken pox a few months ago - just a rash), and today with a suspected infection in a bug bite, they have gotten us in the office the same day.

I don't recall ever feeling rushed by Dr. Tarbox, but I'll be honest, I have felt rushed by some of the other doctors there.

  • Thanks for the info Madisen! I've noticed the attitude too, so I usually ask to see Cara or Dr. Sarah, but we'll definitely keep a close eye on things now too. I've already told DH I wonder if Dr. Mary would've even thought to check for RSV since Jonathan wasn't really showing any real symptoms.
