s/o Tipping

Something I don't usually tip for...didn't know it was common practice and never really took it up after finding out is tipping housekeeping in hotels.

Do you tip for this?

What's one thing you do or don't tip for that you think might be against the norm?

Re: s/o Tipping

  • I always tip in a hotel when I stay more than a couple nights.

  • I usually don't tip housekeeping in hotels either. If we stay at a B&B I do. I am not sure why I see it as different.

Do you tip at places like Moe's or Coldstone where they have a tip jar at the counter? I don't.

  • I never tipped in a hotel either, I never even thought about it 'til my grandma did it when we were in Vegas.

  • I don't tip at places like Starbuck's or Coldstone's either...DH does if he pays with cash which is rare.

  • If we stay multiple nights at a hotel we tip. I don't tip at most counter order restaurants but I do tip at Tijuana Flats since they bring you your food and refills.

If I pay with cash (which is rare), I drop the change in the tip jar.  Otherwise, I don't.

  • I've never tipped at a hotel. I've always wondered how people do this? If I were to leave a couple dollars lying out, I think I'd be upset that the housekeeper took it. How do they know?

When we went to Disney my SIL had an envelope she had written "Housekeeping" on. She stuck the tip in there, some days the money was gone and some days it wasn't.

  • I tip at a hotel if I'm staying a while. I don't if it's just one or two nights though. We tipped our trash guys the other day when all our kitchen deconstruction was out there.

  • I'm a really good tipper for people who make server's wages. If you make a full wage and do your job, I don't tip. If you go above and beyond and do a great job or if it's somewhere I go regularly and have a friendly relationship, I will tip (or tip higher if I would've tipped anyway).

I don't usually tip at somewhere like starbucks (would you tip at mcdonalds? Is it drastically different?).. i don't tip housekeeping unless it's a really fancy place and they make like towel swans or something (and let's face it, I don't stay at those places).. I rarely tip for pizza delivery.

I know that some ppl who work/worked in the service industry see this as bitchy/rude, but it kind of gets under my skin that people think just because they look the recipient of their efforts in the face that they should get a bonus. You did your job for your agreed-upon salary and drove my pizza to my house. That's your job. No one whose relatives have cancer slips me a ten-spot because I did a great experiment. The premise just irks me.

  • Aren't pizza delivery guys just waiters on wheels? They work for a lesser amount than minimum wage in expectation of tips correct?
  • I tip just as much for much pizza delivery as I would for any server. Both H and I were pizza delivery people in high school so I know how bad that jobs sucks.

  • I had a couple of friends who did pizza delivery in HS, and they were paid the same per hour I was for an office gig. Maybe it's different here? (If so I will def feel like a douche and be glad that we almost always go to pick it up!)

  • I'm with Pants & Jodi on this one...I thought they got paid less. Jodi- What was it like when you and DH delivered? We usually pick up, but if they ever deliver, we tip.

ETA: I guess if they get paid the same, I can see why you feel this way Jenhap. I guess I just see it as an extra service that I pay a little extra for.

We tip food delivery guys a couple of bucks, not the same as what we would pay a server.  DH believes the same as jenhappy on this one.

I was in AL and I think I made right at min. wage, so maybe $5/hour and that was only b/c I worked "inside" too. I think H made less than min. wage in FL b/c he was a driver only and tips were expected to supplement his income.

  • If I pay with cash, a drop the change and a dollar in the bucket. I don't tip for curbside food pickup. I do tip the pizza delivery go, but not the cashier, if I pick it up. I do tip our babysitter.
  • The pizza delivery friends I knew in HS definitely counted on tips, they made less than minimum wage and spent money on gas.

See, that's interesting. I would not tip in a B&B because I assume that the people doing the cleaning are also the people collecting the $100 dollars I'm spending to stay there--the owners. Whereas I sometimes tip in hotels because I know they aren't making very much and I just feel bad for the grossness they've probably seen all day.

I don't tip at any non-restaurant food place other than Starbucks. I typically have a ton of gift cards to there because people know I'm a major addict, so I rarely have to pay out of pocket. Therefore, if the barista is friendly and/or quick and/or funny, I tip because I believe in encouraging nonsnootiness in baristas :)

  • We always tip when we have food delivered, I never thought not to.

Do you guys tip at places like Sweet Tomatoes where you get your own food, but they come clear your dishes/table?

The last B&B we stayed out had an actual housekeeper that was not the owner. I am not sure if this is the norm.

I always tip for food delivery as well. I believe they have to pay for their own gas and not to mention the wear and tear on their car. I doubt minimum wage covers these expenses. It seems like they would count on there tips to earn a decent income.

If I have cash I tip at Sweet Tomatoes.

I leave a couple of dollars for them, especially if they've refreshed our drinks or been on top of clearing the tables. I assume that since they're not actual waitstaff, they get paid a regular amount.
