About five months ago, a mastiff appeared in the backyard next to ours. Super sweet dog, very big (probably 130 lbs), barked a lot, but whatever. Our neighbor said it was his mom's dog and she couldn't keep him. I did go over once to ask if they could let him in at night due to the barking waking us up at all hours, and he said no way was he letting a dog that big in his house. Whatever. I judge that, but nothing I can do. (We live in a duplex, and our window is literally three feet from our shared fence, so it was loud!)
Well, I had been concerned because there is no shade in their backyard and they never once let the dog inside (rain, snow, shine, etc). Sometimes they would leave for a weekend and just put a bucket of water and a huge bowl of food out there. It has been 110 degrees lately...
I am just sick. DH said to me yesterday morning that he noticed we hadn't heard the dog bark recently. Then last night, we were in our backyard and saw through the tiny fence slats that there was a 4 ft by 4 ft hole dug in their yard. We knew immediately what happened. The dog died from the heat and they were burying it. I had to go inside immediately because I didn't want to see the poor dead animal or any other details of the situation. Went outside a couple of hours later to let our dog out (b/c we don't leave him outside unattended!) and they were filling up the hole.
DH wouldn't let me say anything tacky, and I know it's not my business. But that is just neglect bordering on abuse. People should have to pass a test before they can care for animals. That dog was so sweet and just needed a little interaction and some inside TLC during the heat and cold.
ETA: post below with questions for anyone who knows about ordinances and such.
Re: my neighbor's dog--sick to my stomach
I cried last night. I just feel sick. I should have done something, but the neighbor kept mentioning to us he was working on finding a home for the dog. I wish I had done something earlier.
Oh, I know. My dog loves to lay on the hot concrete too. We never leave him outside unattended for more than five, maybe ten minutes regardless of weather.
I just don't get why people can't understand if it's too hot for a human, it's too hot for a dog.
It's not like we live in a seedy neighborhood. This guy seemed to be a pretty decent guy with a solid job and quiet friends.
I'm also very concerned about this burial technique...what if the hole wasn't deep enough? It's so hot, and there's no rain predicted....I mean, the dog is bigger than me.
Ugh, I am just nauseous. What do I do if there's a problem? As far as I know, I can't prove they did anything wrong at this point to report them. Even if I called for animal cruelty, he could always say something else caused the pet to die. Is there an ordinance about burying a dog in your backyard?
I'm sorry to be such a downer to the board with this!
Oh no! That is horrible. Honestly, I don't think there is much you could have done... you tried to talk to him and short of calling animal services (can they MAKE the owner take the dog in the house?) then I don't know...
I am so sad for that poor dog. One of our dogs (Boxer) loves to lay outside in the grass and lounge around. I only allow him to do this no longer than 10 mins (while supervising) then he is in the house immediately following. That is so very sad... poor dog.
Oh, our dog does too! I called it "doggie sunbathing" - she stretches her little doggie belly out - it is so cute. She will even doggie sunbath in the pool on a float.
That's adorable!
