Bday ideas for DH

DH is turning 30 in a few weeks and I'm really struggling to figure out a gift. The only thing he wants is golf lessons, but I really want to give him something tangible. A trip is also out of the question b/c of vacation time.

I really really want to get him a TAG Heuer watch, but I don't know if I can swing the money.

Any brilliant suggestions under $1,000?

TIA!

Re: Bday ideas for DH

  • My H bought himself a new set of golf clubs for his 30th last year.  I had absolutely nothing to do with the purchase...so I took him out for sushi and threw him a party at our house.  It was great and exactly what he wanted.

Is there a new golf club your DH has been oogling?  I know clubs are something he should pick out himself, but if you know of one...maybe that can be the tangible gift to go with the lessons?  I don't know - I suck at guy's gifts.  My best gift to my H was boudoir photos the first year we were married...all downhill after that :)

  • I don't think he needs any clubs, but I'll check with his dad to see if he knows. Thanks :)
  • Could you maybe do a golf theme? Like get him the lessons, does he need a new bag? Covers for the clubs, tees, balls, etc?

Maybe a fancy bag with his initials on it? Or is that cheese? I don't know.

  • What about arranging a surprise golf outing for him and his dudes then a swank dinner with the dudes and you and the other wives/girlfriends can meet up with them after golf?

  • These are great ideas, thanks.

I just really want to give him something tangible that he'll be remember as his 30th bday gift. But I just can't figure out what that tangible thing is. Sigh.

  • I'm not sure if this is too early for him (or you), but a dog?

Oh man I would LOVE to do that, but I don't think it's realistic right now. He might kill me. Hmm..

  • I'm sorry, I am completely gobsmacked you have a grand to spend on him

I hear you. But keep in mind that fun and memories are tangible! Sometimes stuff is just stuff, kwim?

  • If he really wants lessons maybe you should splurge on that, it's important for golfers I think who want to improve their handicap.  Like one of those sports where a few good (advanced) lessons can do wonders.  As far as the tangible thing, what about just getting him some golf balls with Happy 30th or I love all 30 years of you! printed on them, then every time he plays he will remember his birthday?  I'm sure I've seen custom printed golf balls out there....

I hear you about wanting something tangible because when there is no wrapped up gift you feel like it's not a big deal but I think experience gifts can be so much better because of the memories like LD said.  I like the idea of getting him the lessons and a new club or golf bag.

  • I like the golf theme....buy him a new club or bag, get him lessons, and then arrange a golfing day for him and a friend or two.

Where would you get the golf lessons? DH has been wanting lessons, and I may do this for his b-day this year since we didn't do much for his 30th last year.

  • I spent at least $1000 on DH's 30th birthday party. The 30th birthday is a big one and you make it big deal if you can.

You've got to go with what you know he'd love and it sounds like golf is his thing so you should run with that. Call a couple of the local golf places and let them know you are interested in learning more about what they could offer. I don't know anything about golf but they may have packages and ideas that you wouldn't of thought of on your own.

  • Tickets to this? http://www.greenbrierclassic.com/

Im not into golf but I hear this is supposed to be a great PGA Tour event and the greenbrier is an awesome resort in a picturesque part of WV. It might be too far away, though ;(

  • A Tag...that's all my hubby wants too.  He always gets me great gifts, but I can't swing a Tag.

Rue La La currently has a whole section of golf-related specials: http://www.ruelala.com/event/32623  You need to belong to Rue La La to see the page though (membership is free).

And personally, I love 'memory' gifts.  For my birthday this fall, all I want are tickets to a Broadway show, and a nice dinner & room in Time Square, with some sight seeing sqeezed in for good measure.  A $1,000 should cover a long weekend somewere in the surrounding area.

  • I saw my aunt who golfs yesterday and she said you can also buy a ball embosser, so that he could personalize his own balls (hee hee) forevermore.  I guess you can design the imprint yourself.

    Teehee, embossed balls.

My cousin who golfs suggested a golf GPS, so I'm thinking about doing that, along with the lessons. I'm just resigned to the fact that I'm not going to be excited about his gift, but as long as he is, that's what matters.

I will check out the embosser thing though!
