What is there to do in Lancaster?

My mother is coming to visit this weekend and she wants to spend Saturday in Lancaster (not sure why other than she's never been and wants to check out "Amish Country")...I've been out there before to buy fabric with my MIL and I've been to the outlets but what else is there to do? Maybe an Amish flea market or something along those lines???

  • my fil and wilbur buds that's all i have
  • Theres a reading terminal type market in downtown lancaster (Broad Street Market is the name I THINK). The section of  lancaster immediately surrounding Franklin and Marshall College campus is pretty nice (recently revitalized) and there's an Iron Hill Brewery there, if you want to be reminded of the Philly burbs during your trip. There are a few nice spas in the lancaster area if your mom would be interested in that. Also, theres this little Peddlers Village type place in Intercourse (near Lancaster) that looks exceedingly cute and old timey if shes one for crafts or just wandering picturesque landscapes (the photos of ice cream on the website totally sold me on it!) http://www.kitchenkettle.com/index.asp

  • okay you HAVE to go to kitchen kettle this weekend because they are having a "Sassy Spoon Party"...sure to be a good time.

  • Definitely go into Lititz and get chocolate at the Wilbur Factory!   They have chocolate covered everything and it's the best chocolate.  That has nothing to do with the Amish, but its the yummy.

  • The Good 'n Plenty restaurant/smorgasbord (not really what it is - they serve everything family-style) is ridiculous.  And delicious.  Eat there.
  • Are you eating dinner there? Mary's Meals is this amish woman's house, and she has roughly 20-30 people in her home for dinner, and everything is home made, from the breads, vegetables, sides, pasta's, pies etc. It's the most amazing meal I have ever had, I'm going not this Saturday but next. We went there two years ago, and it was amazing.

She has a phone outside of her house for her business if you have any interest, I can give you the phone number tonight when I get home. It's free, but there is a suggested donation of 20 dollars per person, and there is so much food.... and so many dishes. It's the one thing I recommend about Lancaster.

Shady Maple is good too.  My parents took me there on our way home from Pittsburgh.  HUGE restaurant/smorgasbord.  Go early though, about 5-6 the lines are out the door.

Intercourse is pretty much the spot to be.  Kitchen Kettle is a neat little villagae of shops.

  • Shannon - I sent you her info.

  • We went to two different Schmorgesborgs and I didn't really care for either of them. I thought the food was really average.

  • i lived in lancaster for a few years while i was in school. i went shopping at central market every saturday. it's the oldest running farmer's market in the country. http://www.centralmarketlancaster.com/

also, lancaster dispensing company, fondly known as DipCo, is right next to market. it's a great place for lunch and a cold beer (http://dispensingco.com/).   the heritage center and quilt and textile museum is right next door. there are also a ton of little shops and art galleries in the few blocks surrounding the building.

lancaster brewing company (http://www.lancasterbrewing.com/) is only a few minutes from market also.

  • Thanks everyone! These are great suggestions and I'm thinking I should stop eating now based on the amount of calories it appears I'm going to take in on this little day trip!

BP, can you send me that number? NewQueenPhilly at gmail. Thanks :)

  • I'm from Lancaster and lived there for about 20 years! While the Amish aren't exciting to me anymore, I guess I understand why people go to see them.. :)

Central Market in downtown Lancaster is a fun place to go on Saturday mornings. I used to walk there every week to buy fresh produce, meats, and cheese. Keifers's Meats & Cheese is one of the stand there a friend's family owns. Great stuff!

There are some cute little shops all around the block around Central Market if you want to walk around more.

The Outlets are obviously another big attraction - Tanger Outlets are better for clothing, while the other ones next door have other types of shops.

Just around the corner from the outlets is a town called Strasburg. It is a really cute little town that has tons of shops, and the best homemade icecream! You have to stop at "The Creamery", it's right on the main street (If I remember correctly, it's at the corner of 896 & 741). They make homemade waffle cones, icecream, and there's also a little candy/gift shop attached. I just drove by last weekend, and also noticed there's a small winery right next door!! Could be fun to check out!

Hope that helps - enjoy your time there!
