Ahh, Parents

My Dad is a consummate salesman.  It's a running joke that he's held a wide variety of jobs over the years, and almost all of them have involved sales of some sort or another.

A few months ago he joined a multi-level marketing system to sell cell phone service.  I never listened to the details because I was utterly uninterested, but it sounded ridiculous.

His latest is that he's selling energy.  I got a phone call a couple of days ago asking me to look at his website, compare his company's rate with our BGE rate, and then make the switch if his rate was cheaper.  Which it is, but DH is inherently suspicious and hasn't taken the time to look into it, so he's loathe to make a change in something as important as our energy supplier.

I just had to break the news to Dad that we wouldn't be switching.  I respect my husband's feelings on the situation, but I feel guilty telling my Dad that I won't be one of his customers helping him to meet a sales goal.

I called my Mom and asked her why she had to marry a salesman.  She laughed and said she'd gotten the same call (they're divorced).

  • While I do understand because I felt the same way, you can always switch back immediately if you don't like it.  I was totally against switching, but H wanted to support someone so he made the switch.  BGE still is the billing agent and still supplies some of the energy (at least from what I can tell per the bill), but we are able to save a few bucks (idk the exact amt) and help someone in their sales.  We haven't had any issues and we've had it for over 6 months.

Thanks for the input!  One of my sisters made the switch and her husband is the type to research everything in great detail before making a decision.  I'm going to discuss it again with DH this weekend when we both have time to sit down and read up on it.  His gut reaction is that it sounds shady, but I do want to give my Dad the courtesy of doing the research.  When I told him that we weren't switching I told him that it was the case for now - I let him know we may change our mind.

  • I totally think it's wise to research.  Energy is something fairly important to have so you want to be sure it's working properly.  I was very skeptical of those energy companies and never gave it the time of day to research.  When someone we knew started to sell it, H said he was switching.  I fought it a bit and finally said whatever just do what you want.  I fought it because frankly I was too lazy to research it and I felt it was a scam.

We are with Viridian if that is any additional help and we don't live too far from you.  Again, we've had no supply issues from what I can tell and I still pay BGE (so that did make me feel a bit better).

  • H has a friend like this. He is always into something and we are FB friends so I am always getting invites to his latest ventures (all of which are pyramid schemes and seeing as he is horrible with $ I ignore it). But really what I wanted to say is OMG I LOVE YOUR SiGGY!!!!
  • We made the switch after doing some research. BGE is still our distributor but we have a different company supply the energy. We save about $15-20 a month. It's definitely worth doing a little bit of research and finding a company that works for you.

My sisters' mother is also into pyramid schemes, which sheds a little light on something they actually had in common 50 years ago when they were together.  She's constantly inviting me to crap on Facebook and it makes me nuts.

A friend's mother does the same thing.  What is it about that 60-ish age range?  Freaking out over not having saved enough for retirement?  I made DH promise me we'd never become pyramid schemers.

And isn't it great?!  I lurved it so much when I saw it.  I'm totally geeking out over all of the HP love floating around the internet right now.  Are you going to see the premiere?

I thought I recalled you asking about this recently!  What company did you end up going with?

  • We went with Castlebridge Energy Group.
