name change

So after more than a year of being married, I decided to change my last name.

I'm expecting a big pain in the asss, so hopefully you can help me!

Do I go to the social security office first, and then DMV? Do I have to bring any forms filled out or anything besides ID, marriage license, proof of address, etc?

Also- did anyone drop their middle name and shift their maiden name over (first maiden new last)?  Is there another step in this since it isn't just changing the last name?

I did the SS office first, then the DMV.  I can't 100% remember, but I think at the DMV they asked for my SS card with my new name on it.

Also, I would add a book to the list-- I waited nearly 2 hours in the SS office and got yelled at for texting ;)

  • So this will be as fun as I'm anticipating?  Yes!

  • It doesn't matter what order you go in. I went to SS first and then immediately over to the DMV all in one day. I did not have a new SS card with me. All I brought was my old license and my marriage certificate. I think I brought my birth certificate for good measure but didn't need it.

A book is probably a good idea.

  • Also..I feel like the DMV only took cash? Or maybe it was only a check? You might want to look it up bc they only took one form of payment and I can't remember what it was. But that was also 3 years ago, so who knows.

  • It doesn't matter which order you go in as long as you have your marriage license. Also- I went to the ss office in south Philly by the stadiums and didn't wait at all. If your close by it might be worth a shot!
  • Thanks Kernel! Bringing cash is a good heads up too, I never have any on me.

  • i did mine in 30mins. not a pain at all. went to ss in center city then dmv in chinatown.

i went middle of the week around 10/11 am

i shifted my maiden  name they just ask you to write your new name down and bam done

  • The SS office and the DMV are the easy part! Then you've got your credit cards, banks, employer, passport, insurance (health, car, life), car title (if you own), car registration, loans (student, car, mortgage), any retirement plans/accounts or investments, doctors offices etc. etc. etc...I still haven't changed my name on everything. I deal with issues as they come up. The whole process is such a PITA!

  • Apparently I had it easy.  I think it depends on the time of the day.  I was able to go around 2pm, which was after the lunch rush and before the "I left work early" rush..  I was in and out at each place in about 10 minutes.  and yes, bring CASH!
  • the DMV does not accept cash.  Only checks or money orders.

  • yeah, sadly, I learned the hard way.  I didn't do my research.  Not only are they closed on Mondays, I didn't know I had to pay for a new license.  it was only 10 bucks, I think becasue I was doing a change of address as well.  Luckily, there was a check cashing place across from my local DMV, so the "nice" lady let me run across get one and then just get back in line.
