S/O Gifts: White Elephant

Do any of you actually do White Elephant gift exchanges, either with family or friends?  Do you like them?  Explain to me the actual draw...

I freaking *hate* White Elephant..  "Let's Exchange Junk!"  I don't want my own crap cluttering up my house, much less someone else's sht.

But maybe I'm a commie because I also loathe anything remotely resembling "Yankee Swap" for gift exchanges, as well.

  • I've never done it.

  • My grandma will do a version of it once and a while. She's one of those people that buys through out the year. Then when Christmas comes, she forgets what she's bought.

Every few years she'll round up all the random stuff she's bought, wrap it, and put it in a box. Sometimes it's good stuff like a set of pretty coffee mugs, sometimes it's random stuff like ugly socks. Anyways, it's actually fun. Sometimes you get something really cool. Also, no one feels bad if in the end you chuck it.

I actually like White Elephant though. It's hilarious to me. I have no problem taking whatever it is I get home and throwing it away though.

  • I'll only participate in a White Elephant exchange with Michael Scott.

  • I love them solely for the fact that I can easily dispose of stuff given by my MIL without DH really noticing.  I only do it for our office christmas party.  Last year a I got a scarf that I was able to return to Macy's for $40, so its not all bad.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
  •  What is it? We play goofy gifts. Is it like that?

We all buy a bunch (10-15) cheap goofy/stupid gifts, wrap and toss into a pile. We draw numbers and then pick a gift and open. It goes around a few times and there are trading rules (for the occasional cool gifts like the candy handcuffs that we fought over last year).

  • H's family does this every Christmas. It's quickly become my favorite part. Some people bring totally useless stuff, some people bring funny stuff, some bring awesome stuff that the different family branches fight over. It's hilarious.
  • My dad's side of the family does what Julsey's fam does, and it's my favorite part of the holidays. The dynamics are always the same:

    - Wretched Aunt & Little Cousin pitch in gifts that they each want.

    - Dad pitches in some sort of frozen meat (usually Omaha steaks)

    - Mom pitches in a gift she wants Grandma to get, but Wretched Aunt wants it just to piss people off.

    - H & I pitch in the stupid, hilarious gifts (I did the maxi pad slippers/sleeping mask combo last time. This year H has a DVD on the history of Scientology and a book about the history of Azerbaijan. This year, I'm framing a pic of the five-legged donkey.)

    - And Grandma always always always puts in something really nice, even though we're all directed to give silly/stupid gifts.

It really is a blast. And gifts get blatantly regifted every year.
