Work Related: Walking out of a meeting

Have you ever walked out of a meeting at work because you were angry?

I haven't, but we were having a meeting earlier and someone got mad about something ridiculous and just got up and walked out.  When someone called out and said are you going to your desk to get the dates, said person just yelled out over her shoulder towards the closing door "No, I am done."

It struck me as completely unprofessional.

Re: Work Related: Walking out of a meeting

  • No, but I have been tempted on more than one occasion.  I have also had thoughts of just standing up at my desk screaming "I FREAKING QUIT!" and walking out.

  • I've definitely done it in my head...but never IRL.

  • Holy crap.  No.  If you really have objections to what is being said bring them up in a constructive professional manner at the appropriate time.  That might be right there at the meeting or later with a more targeted audience.

Walking out is just childish.  She needs a time out and if she throws a pen or stapler, it gets taken away Stick out tongue

  • Um, no.  I couldn't even imagine doing that.

When I worked, there was nothing that would make me that mad.  I just didn't care enough =)

    Yeah, same here.

  • I've walked out on the head football coach before because he was being a complete and utter arse

  • I have.  Walking out was much more professional than the words that would have come out of my mouth had I stayed.  That said I worked for a total ASS and it was at a meeting on a SATURDAY that has lasted 2 HOURS where they screamed at us about sales numbers and I had already blown out my quota for the year and it MARCH.

That was the day I decided to try something new.  5 weeks later, I sold my first house, gave my notice, and never looked back.

  • I never..but I would never say that it's something that I would never do.  If it was a certain group that I could care less about, then I have no issues doing it because I don't want to waste one more minute with them in a useless meeting (and yes, there are people that request meetings all the time for stupid stuff that they can ask in 5 minutes by walking to my desk, but for some reason, they always schedule a meeting and waste everyone's time).

With that said, I have never gotten mad enough to do it.  I would rather put them in their spot and tell them like it is in front of everyone.  And then smile. =)

This.  I just left momentarily to calm down and get my bearings (a literal time out!), because if I didn't, I would have started screaming at someone. I returned about 5 minutes later and was able to continue the meeting with less emotional turmoil.  :)

    This exactly.

  • Definitely unprofessional.  I wouldn't do that unless I was mad enough to quit, and even then I'd go down in a blaze of glory - throwing papers everywhere, flipping over desks, and doing what Scarface did in "Half Baked" - F you, F you, F you, you're cool, F you, I'M OUT.

  • i have. similar to nanner. it was an ugly situation and i was about to cry i was so upset. so i said excuse me i need a minute, went to the restroom, splasshed some water on my face, took some deep breaths and went back.  i had worked with  the same group for over 2 yrs and had never lost my cool before so it actually sent the message that i do have a limit but when you cross it i wont freak out.  it went smoothly after that.  i would never say , i'm done and storm off.  well not now anyway.

For real though, whenever I got peeved at meetings at school I would poker face it and then *** when my boss left.

  • So the person who walked out has a very strong personality and is quick to make other people mad.  It was a situation of she can dish, but she couldn't take.  And the taking was over something really ridiculous.  I don't know if she had something else going on in her life that was affecting her, but based on the dishing she'd been doing up to that point, I think she was just pissy.

  • I have never walked out of a meeting, but I have seen 3 really awesome freakouts (all by the same person who is no longer at the company).

Freakout 1: He was screaming at the team because he said people where lying. Then he said, "the next time I figure out someone is lying your arse is grass and I'm a lawnmower." Then he stormed out and I died laughing.

Freakout 2: He was screaming at someone on the phone during a conference call and the person hung up. Then he stormed out.

Freakout 3: He was screaming at someone who really had it all together asn he was very cool about everything. The the screamer got p!ssed that he wasn't getting a reaction and said they should, "take this outside." The guy he was talking to could have kicked his arse without really trying. Then he stormed off.

He left the company soon after. Ironically he left on his own to start a new company. He wasn't fired. :sigh:

  • I wanted to once.  My boss was yelling at me and calling me unprofessional for a bunch of things that I did that had been standard policy (and no one had been notified that they had changed).

I couldn't walk out of the meeting because she came to my office and closed the door. So I tried to talk her into some sense but it didn't work.  When she finally left, I left the office and took a walk for a looooong time.

Then quit the next day.  (it was a long time coming.)
