Commission

Hello!

Newbie here with a question about retail commission based pay. I had a phone interview for a job yesterday and have an in-person interview next week for a position with a national retailer as a commission based decorating consultant.

Does anyone have an idea of what I should expect to see as base pay? Also, are commission based jobs always paid by the hour or are they sometimes salary?

Any explanation of how commission works (beyond the very basic) would be helpful!

TIA!

Re: Commission

  • I've never had a job that was 100% commission based, but I did have a retail job that was base + commission.

The commission part was calculated by taking our sales minus returns for the specific pay period, times the rate.  We only got commission on sales ABOVE our sales goal.

I think I got something like 5% commission above my goal.  So if my goal was $1000 for the month, and I sold $4000, minus $500 in returns, times 5%:

    ($4000-$1000-$500) x 0.05 = $125

For us the "goal" part was a flat rate that our manager's would post each month:

For example, if the goal was $50/hr, and you worked 20 hrs/week, then your goal would be $1000/week.

It was possible for us to "run our numbers" on the registers to get a real-time estimate of how we were doing for the month--so our bonus in our paycheck was never really a surprise--unless you weren't working at the end of the week and someone else took in a large return under your number before the pay period was up!  (always hated that, LOL)

As far as the specifics, like when you will get paid, etc, that will vary.

My job I was paid weekly, and the base pay was hourly.

I know this doesn't 100% answer your question, but I hope it helps a little.  :)

Yay! Finally able to update my signature :)

  • i worked at allel and we had a base salary plus commision, i think my base pay was like $10 an hour so my commission made up most of my take home pay.,

when i was an insurance agent I was started at 32k a yr plus commission.

hope this helps, thankfully i am in a salary position now that i am much happier in. good luck to you

  • Thank you! It is helpful to see some numbers. I'm hoping that the interviewer will tell me that base pay rate and will be able to tell me what to expect for commission, because it's so hard to evaluate if it will be worth it... I guess I just have to show up and find out!
