Rathbun's review

I posted here about going to Rathbun's last Friday for our anniversary and promised I would come back with a review. The food was very good and I would recommend Rathbun's. I honestly wasn't totally blown away, but then again we ate at Bacchanalia for our anniversary last year, and I'm not sure anywhere can touch them!

I wore a dress and heels and didn't feel overdressed. Then again, I wasn't paying all that much attention to what everyone else was wearing.

We started with a small plate (salmon tostadas) and a raw plate (tomato and mozzarella salad) to share. The salmon tostadas were good. The tomato and mozzarella salad was absolutely amazing. I am not typically one to get this excited about tomatoes, but I guess that's because the tomatoes I usually eat are mediocre. The mozzarella and basil were awesome too.

For dinner, I had the duck breast with Thai risotto (a "big plate"). It was really good. H had a dry-aged Kansas City strip (a "second mortgage plate"). He really liked it too. We were a little taken aback that the meals didn't come with any sides. We didn't realize that you had to order them separately.

For dessert, we had the "you pick four" for $12. I figured each dessert would be two bites, but they were a little more generously sized than I expected. The strawberry shortcake was to.die.for. The others were good but not as memorable.

Our bill was $135 before tax and tip for the food, an inexpensive bottle of wine ($26), and two cups of coffee. I thought that was pretty reasonable for a splurge meal.

Pros: Great food, especially seasonal produce (tomato and mozzarella salad and strawberry shortcake). Great service, reasonably priced.

Cons: H and I were really hot in the restaurant, and I was wearing a sleeveless dress. H asked the waitress if she could crank the a/c, but she said it was already on high, and I guess the restaurant just stays hot in the summer. When we got our desserts, the ice cream melted almost instantly.
