SF recommendations

I posted about a week ago about taking BART, now another question...

The H and I are planning a trip to SF the day after the baseball game. I want to know what places are fun/interesting.off the beaten path places to visit. We have done the Pier 39/fishermans wharf thing before and would like a new experience.

Also, any recs for great Thai food. TIA!

Re: SF recommendations

  • A lot of great SF things are tourist attractions, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

Golden Gate Park has the Japanese Tea Garden, the de Young Museum, the Conservatory of Flowers, the buffalo pen, etc.

You can drive over the GG Bridge and go up to the Marin Headlands for a great photo op (assuming no fog).

If you're into museums, there's also the Asian Art Museum and MOMA.

    Lombard Street and Ghiradelli Square

Walk around and explore the different neighborhoods like the Castro, Haight-Ashbury, the Mission, Pacific Heights (the shopping on Union Street is great, very different from Union Square).

King of Thai Noodle has great, cheap Thai food.  Osha Thai is also good (though I'm sad they've significantly raised their prices).

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Have you been to Haight/Ashbury? That's always fun. My favorite Thai restaurant, Thep Phanom, is in the Lower Haight area on Waller & Fillmore.

Chinatown is also fun but also not exactly off the beaten path. Or if you'd like a more mellow experience, the area around Clement Ave. is neat.

I lived on Clement St. but don't think there's much to intrigue a tourist there besides a few good restaurants (namely Burma Super Star, Clementine or India Clay Oven way in the Outer Richmond.  Oh, and Schubert's Bakery--yum!).
