Going back to old job?

Just a little background information- I left my job in December for a new opportunity. I had been with this previous employer for 2 years (it was my first job out of college). I thought this new company would be a good fit, but after being there for almost 8 months I realize it is not. I feel like I took two steps back from where I was. I have less responsibility and overall do less higher level skills.

 When I left, my supervisor told me if it doesn't work out, they would love to have be back. How do I open the door with my manager about coming back? Has anyone done this? What was the outcome?

  • I haven't, but some colleagues have done this everywhere I've worked. Some were re-hired, others were not.

    There's no harm in calling or emailing your former supervisor and asking if this would be a possibility, just be prepared he may say no. They may not have any budget to take you on, or otherwise not able/willing to bring you back. You never know unless you ask.

    I would be prepared to address the question (spoken or not) on how they know you won't want to leave again soon.

  • you know, I don't think they'll say no, but they say they aren't in the position to hire you back at this time.  So I would get on this right away, and when something does open, they'll know to start with you.

    I would just send an email, do not bad mouth this company, but something like "I think I am realizing that my position with you was a better fit and I wanted to see if there is a possibility of me returning"

  • I wouldn't e-mail. I would call. Catch the former supervisor up on what you've been up to, how you feel about the new job (it's not as good a fit as you hoped), ask about openings (either now or in the future) at your old company. The worst they can say is "we have nothing right now". But you'll be top of mind if something opens up in the future.
