Would this make a good gift?

I've been sending H books whenever I get a box together, but I'm concerned by the end of deployment he's going to have run out of space.

Do you think a Kindle would make a good birthday/anniversary gift? I figured I'd put the next few books from the series he's reading on there and then he can download any more when he's in port.

Re: Would this make a good gift?

  • I love mine! If he likes to read, then yes this would be a great gift, especially considering space concerns.

  • that'd be awesome.  we both have nooks; they're great.
  • I think it would make a great gift, and it would be good for the space issue that he may have on the ship.

  • Absolutely.  I have a kindle over here right now and It's fantastic. Just make sure you register it or whatever before you send it over.  When you first set it up it has to be wirelessly - which doesn't work over here (because it's not an open network).  Once it's set up he can download and transfer books via USB from his computer.  You basically just click and drag the document.  The books usually take a minute to download to my desktop, and my connection isn't that fast over here.  Also get him one of the covers with a built in light.  The lighting isn't always good enough for reading here so I always use my light to read.

    I'm sure he'll love it.

Great idea! I didn't even think about that.

Thanks for the reassurance ladies, I hope he'll like it!

ETA: are there any other must-have accessories?

  • I just got a kindle for my birthday a couple months ago and I LOVE it!! Its nice that it is so small too!! It's really easy to get the books you want downloaded and I like it because now I can read a ton without having to find space in the house to store more paperbacks ;)

  • Must have accessory is a card for the Philadelphia library.

H ended up leaving a lot of the books I sent him.  I'm ok with that b/c hopefully someone else ended up appreciating them since a lot of them weren't mainstream books that you'd find in small libraries.

  • I think it would make a great gift.  As a matter of fact, I was going to get the H one for his deployment gift but then he walked in about four months ago and said "look at what I got...it is so cool!"  Yep you guessed it a Kindle.  I thought I was being very thoughtful and ahead of the game and this was the first that I heard he even wanted one.  Oh well, I guess it is peanut butter, drink mixes and hand wash for him...HAA.  I will however load a couple of books for him.

I sometimes just wish they would wait to buy something...does any one of you other ladies have that issue?  I get a great gift idea and the next thing I know the H has bought it. I will wait and drop hints...Smile Difference between men and women I guess.

  • Definitely a great gift.  We just ordered mine for my anniversary gift, and H is considering getting one as well for deployment.  He said there are a ton of guys on the ship who have them, and they all love having them because of the space.

Definitely get a lighted cover as someone else said.  There's really no other must have accessory.  You can also by the cover and light separately, but since the Kindle doesn't have any backlighting you definitely need a light for it.  If you're looking for something else to add to it you can add an Amazon gift card so he can add a few books right away.

  • My H adores his Kindle. It was bought with frequent travel/deployments in mind. So far it's been to like 3 or 4 different countries! Stupid Kindle is better traveled than I am...
