Likely stupid Q re: lightbulbs
I had a contractor over today to give us an estimate on painting the kitchen, and I showed him the picture of these pendant lights I just ordered for the room. He said he thought they are "phasing out" regular lightbulbs such as these & eventually you will only be able to buy CFLs & all light fixtures will use CFLs?? Can this possibly be true? I can't imagine that regular lightbulbs would go away anytime soon, considering how many fixtures already in use would take them.
Has anyone else heard anything like this? I kind of thought he was losing it, but...
Re: Likely stupid Q re: lightbulbs
I have heard that, but wasn't for sure, so I Googled:
http://money.usnews.com/money/business-economy/articles/2007/12/19/faq-the-end-of-the-light-bulb-as-we-know-it
That being said...would that look awful with the CFL?
Interesting! He was right, he even said he thought it was by 2012. And here I was thinking he was on crack.
I don't know about the new lights, they're not even here yet - but I am picturing a twisty little CFL in there & not liking the mental picture.
We'll see.
Yes, they are phasing out the old bulbs, but they are also creating more stylish CFL bulbs. We have recessed lights in our kitchen and I bought some flood bulbs that are CFL bulbs inside the regular flood style glass. You cannot tell the difference until you turn on the lights and the CFLs are brighter and more white vs the incandescent bulbs, which are more of a yellow light.
Sure, you'll spend more money for a bulb that doesn't look like a squiggle, but eventually, that will be the only option. (You could always horde a ton of those bulbs. I crack up every time I hear some old lady at Target loading up their cart b/c "They're gonna stop making these!! Can you believe it??")
Home Depot and Lowe's already carry a fairly decent selection of "stylish" CFL's. They are quite spendy but they look like the old styles and last WAY longer.
Regarding phasing out the standard bulbs, I hope they do. Those pieces of crap don't last. My FIL bought them to put in our new fixtures in the basement. 3 lights, 3 bulbs each....5 have already burnt out and we just installed them in February. I replaced all of them with CFL's when the original 5 went out. They are just better, IMO.
