Embroidery ladies please chime in!

Ok, I have a bag I want to embroider (40 of them actually).  Here is my dilemma...

The bag is cloth on the outside but the inside seems to be kind of like plastic.  Almost like the silver kind that is in insulated lunch boxes - not shiny but still plastic.  Can I just stick it on the machine and embroider or are there any special circumstances?  I'm new to this but I'm wanting to get this done in the next few weeks.

Thoughts?  Need a picture?

Sono showed no baby and teeny tiny sac. Waiting to M/C naturally.

Re: Embroidery ladies please chime in!

  • Is any of it stretchy?  To be safe, I'd stabilize the heck out of it.  Is it super thick or is it 2 thin layers?
  • OK, apparently I made up the lining part sort of (I blame lack of sleep).

It's only 1 layer but the back is still plasticky feeling.  It's like the cloth has a weird back to it.....  It's one piece of fabric though.  Here's a picture.

So it's a backed fabric?  If so, you can embroider on it but use heavy stab and spray adhesive (don't hoop it).  If it needs to be waterproof or insulated, be sure that you aren't going to compromise.

  • I'm new to embroidery and have never heard of that but I'll go to the sewing store tomorrow and see what it is.  I don't have to hoop with it because that would be amazing?!

I put the medium hoop on this sucker and it was very awkward!

I almost NEVER hoop my projects.  If it is a thin fabric such as cotton, you can hoop but for things such as towels or any nappy fabric, never hoop or you will have "hoop  burn".  I find it so much easier to use spray adhesive on the stabilizer.  NOTE:  BE SURE TO USE ADHESIVE MADE FOR FABRIC/SEWING such as Sulky.

Also, for this particular project, use tear-away stabilizer.

Good luck!  That's a huge (40?!) undertaking for a newbie!
