Just me?

Ok so MH asked me to keep in touch with his mom while he's away..and I agreed and have been keeping on top of things since he left....up until this last week...my hubby was training in TX for a little over a month and was given an off post pass for a few days before shipping out which was ya know awsome! So I let everyone know made sure I sent my mass texts to all parents before take off during my lay over the whole nine...even checked in mid trip...but when I got home I had jet lag and was obviously upset and had to work so I really didn't feel like calling my MIL to gush about the details of my trip but I did tell her I was back....now I've only been back 5 days and MH has already shipped out...and I have made it a priority to keep MIL updated whenever I hear anything all the way down to a pic of him during one of the layovers that was sent to me by one of the other wives....and since I got home the most I've gotten in response was "Great." after letting her know I got an email check in because his phone was out of range...everything else even trying to change the topic of conversation has been ignored...which never happens....Did I do something wrong...or could this just be her shutting off the world because her oldest son is deployed?

Re: Just me?

  • I think that you are doing a TON to keep her in the loop. She's lucky that you are so willing to do so.

I'd assume that she's having a hard time dealing with it. You didn't do anything wrong.

This! You're going above and beyond and I think that's awesome that your doing so much to keep her up to date.  She is just probably having a rough time right now so don't expect too much from her right now. I know its just as hard on you but sometimes Mothers make it seem like its harder for them. Just be there for each other and you'll be set.

  • I agree with the ladies above me.  You are doing a wonderful job!  Everyone deals with deployments their own way, and maybe hers is to kind of shut herself off and just try to not show too much emotion, maybe even sort of ignore it.  I think she will probably open up and be grateful for the updates in her own time.
    Go Navy!
  • Ditto!  I think that you are doing a great job to keep her up to date.  I wouldn't worry just keep on doing what you are doing.  She maybe dealing with this in the only way she knows how to.
  • I agree with pps that you are doing great at keeping MIL up-to-date. Just to throw out another opinion.....Her reaction may be based  on the type of relationship she and YH have.  I mean, did they talk/visit regularly? Before deployment did she know his every move?  My wife has been overseas 5 months now. I've called my MIL a handful of times and she has called me a few.  If anything major happens of course I'll call her but she has no interest in knowing when K goes from one base to another or out on a mission.  She just doesn't and that's perfectly fine.

I definitely agree with this.  As the others have said you are going above and beyond what you need to be telling her.  I don't tell my MIL anything because I know H emails her once in a while from the ship when he's gone.  When he went on his last deployment he had to fly to the Middle East to meet the ship and called me at each flight layover on the way, and I would text her that he had landed.  But after that I figure she follows the ships FB page, and she gets emails from H so I don't need to update her.  If I updated her how you did, I'm sure I would get the same response.

  • It sounds like she might just be having a rough time. You're doing more to keep her updated than I've ever done for anyone while DH deployed. No worries. Maybe all the updates freak her out a bit? Ask her if she likes getting all the info, or if she'd rather you back off a bit. It's totally her call.
  •  Ditto everyone else.

It could be worse.  When MH was deployed last time around, MIL was calling me 3-4 times a day to ask if I had heard from him.
