XP: WWYD? Sell car or buy extended warranty?
(XP from Money Matters) i have a 2007 hard top convertible that i really have fun driving. before this car, i had a honda cr-v. i have missed the room of the cr-v, but my convertible has a back seat and the trunk's not totally small, so it's not been that big of a deal most of the time. my convertible has been in the shop (at the dealer's) many, many times for different issues, and i have an appointment for monday for an issue that came up today. the dealer has always been great about addressing the problems and always fixs everything, and so far, i haven't had to pay anything because the car's still under warranty. the warranty, though, runs out in october. i am really concerned about what this car will start costing when i'm having to pay because of the many mechanical things that can go wrong with the power hard top. and the windows, which is my current problem. i've owned 4 cars, and this car has been in the shop more times than my last 3 cars combined.here's the question: would you sell/trade in this car before the warranty expires and get something more practical, roomy, more reliable (and probably a couple of years newer) but less fun to drive or would you buy an extended warranty that will cover part of the cost of repairs and keep the car, knowing that based on its track record, it will probably be back in the shop many times? i don't know if it matters, but the car's paid off, and the difference between the value of this car and one i'm considering is around $4k (not including taxes), which we can do financially. wwyd? keep it or sell it?

it depends, but they're around $1500-$3k and last between 3 and 6 years. i don't know what all is covered, though. i have had leaking issues (which have apparently been resolved), and the whole top is mechanical. i'm starting to hear the soft clink of imaginary coins as october draws nearer...

i absolutely loved my cr-v, and i owned it for about 8 years. i tend to think that i've driven the fun car for two years, but i'm ready for a car that doesn't have to go in the shop (it's probably been in 10 times since i bought it) and that i can lug things around in. in the cr-v, i didn't have to ask dh to come and pick up things that wouldn't fit in my car, i could garage sale and actually buy stuff, i could haul the dog around, etc. not with this car. truthfully, although i love how fast this car is, i kind of miss the independence the small suv gave me. lol i guess i feel nostalgic for my cr-v after these couple of years!
I would probably sell your car. The problem with a lot of the extended warranties out there is they don't really cover much. It actually sounds like you are missing your old car more any way so maybe it is time before something goes wrong and won't be covered under warranty.
Good luck!
I think I'd sell. Like pp said, extended warranties usually don't cover the same things. I think they're usually for big issues (like a transmission or something) rather than smaller, though still necessary repairs.
Also, payments on 4k (or just outright if you can do that) wouldn't be bad. Especially if you were in a reliable vehicle.
