Wills-how did you set yours up?

Online or through an attorney? If an attorney, do you have a recommendation in the area (and approximate cost)?   I am most concerned with having something in writing regarding guardianship of my DD if DH and I were to pass away.  Thanks.

Re: Wills-how did you set yours up?

  • Through my office we have the option of legal insurance (it's $20 a month).  We signed up for that and had our will and other important paperwork drafted with an attorney
  • we did ours on legalzoom.

    Same
  • I'd strongly advise you to see an attorney, particularly if you're including an advanced directive for health care purposes.

  • I'd also recommend seeing an attorney--since you have a child, you'll need a trust, which is a little more technical than a simple will.

  • We are working with an attorney on ours to make sure we cover all of our bases re. guardianship, wills vs. trusts (for how our money will pass to the surviving spouse when the first passes, as well as pass on to DD), powers of attorney, medical directives, etc.  I want to say it's going to cost us $2-3k?  I think I put that part out of my mind.

The woman we're working with is helpful, but she's in Arlington and I suspect that's not a convenient location for you.

  • We used an attorney because we wanted to make sure that everything was set up for our kids. Also, we have sizable life insurance policies so we wanted to specify how the money should be managed (and hopefully prevent any family fighting). They did a great job and were very thorough in terms of different scenarios that could possibly happen. This is what they charged:

    Will & Trust - $400

Financial Power of Attorney - $100

Advanced Health Care Directive - $100

Each document was per person so for DH and I, it was $1200 total. If you are in MD, I can PM you the law firm.

  • If anyone is interested, I have a pdf of a brochure written by one of my law professors (he's retired now but he is still considered "the" expert on Virginia wills) about why you need a will.  It's pretty good, and many attorneys keep them in their offices to hand out to clients.  The FAQ section may be useful to read prior to meeting with an attorney.

If interested, just let me know!
