Breastfeeding: Question

Okay, I'm starting to worry about milk supply and pumping.  Sawyer is growing and I don't feel like I'm keeping up and DH is starting to get concerned as well.

So any pointers?  I'm not a fan of oatmeal so anything else outside of that?

I'm hoping the two weeks we are on vacation, I can pump 2 and store in the freezer to build a small stash.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Breastfeeding: Question

  • I forced myself to eat oatmeal and that was my biggest help.  Up your water intake, make sure you're getting enough protein.  You can look into supplements like Fenugreek or Mother's Milk Tea.  Lactation cookies are another option.

Do you nurse or just pump?

Kellymom says to take a nursing vacation. Take baby to bed with you for 2-3 days, and do nothing but nurse (frequently!) and rest (well, you can eat too!).

I've also heard you can do this with the pump and pump for 10 minutes every hour. It'll take some serious time commitment but you can totally do it.

Just show your body that you need more.

  • If you are pumping are you just pumping until your empty or for a certain amount of time?  At the beginning it would only take me 15 minutes to pump, but when M started eating more I started pumping for 25 and then my supply adjusted to that.

Also I bought the fenugreek so try and up my supply even more, but it ended up just making me engorged all the time.  I have almost a full bottle I can give you if you want to try it.

  • I nurse in the evenings when I'm home from work and on the weekends.  Pump when I first wake up and 2times at work.

I just read as well about the pumping 5-10 minutes and might for the next couple days go down to the lactation rooms and use the hospital grade pumps.

And I think I can so manage laying in bed with DS for feedings.

I pump till no more milk comes out on both breasts and it is hard at work because that is a 30 minutes session so I only do it twice to not take advantage of work time.

I would greatly appreciate the fenugreek.  Could I meet you before Saturday?

    Great!  I will PM you.

  • I kind of did exactly what you do as far as the pumping/nursing schedule goes. When A was about 6 months old I started noticing the same issue. I tried to do all the little tricks as far as oatmeal and extra water goes, but they didn't help. We ended up just giving him 1 bottle of formula a day (usually his supper  time bottle). And then some days we would then have to do 1/2 and 1/2 for his bedtime bottle as well. We used the blue target brand formula and he did great on it. As I stopped nursing all together, and only pumped (after a biting incident around 7 months...ha!) I noticed that my supply dropped even more. I was able to keep it going until about 9 months, and then I decided to stop. There's all sorts of tricks you can try, but I just wanted to throw the idea of formula out there as I found that once I started giving a little to him every day it took a huge load off of my shoulders and I wasn't as stressed about not making enough to feed him. GL! :)

I have thought of that but right now (as you said) I'm stress and feel like I'm failing.  I was hoping to feed him from the breast for a full year or so but this is getting difficult.  He is gaining weight and that isn't the issue, it is just making sure there is enough if needed.

So your LO didn't start preferring the formula over the breastmilk?

Advice for those who are breastfeeding:  PUMP EARLY AND STOCK UP BIG TIME!!!  I regret this the most.

I totally agree with this. I kept reading to not pump for the first 2 weeks so that's what I did with Owen. I started pumping the day I came home from the hospital with Amelie and it has made a world of difference.

Just keep baby on breast as much as humanly possible and pump, pump, pump. Is he happy right now? I would totally hold off on formula as long as you can, especially if he's happy RIGHT NOW! Do what you can to live in the moment. If you start stressing about what's going to happen in 3 days, next week, etc. you're going to make yourself go nuts.

This.  M had to have formula in the hospital for various reasons and I didn't want my milk to go away so I started pumping that first day.  I definitely think this is key if you want to build a stash.

I understand your frustration, but it is what it is. Maybe the fenugreek with help :)

Nope, I don't think he even knew the difference. We started giving it to him a little at a time, and then eventually transitioned to him having a full bottle of only formula. He didn't care what he was eating as long as he was getting fed! :)

And I couldn't agree more about the stock piling. I totally regret not doing so.

  • Thanks ladies for your help and support!  I love this board!
  • The only other piece of advice I have re: BF is to make sure you are getting enough protein, especially in the morning ie. for breakfast. I was having some trouble with my supply & this is what a midwife friend of mine recommended - I was always a really good water drinker, pumped appropriately, etc, but I had really been watching my diet trying to lose weight from the baby. As soon as I started eating more protein esp. for breakfast I saw a big improvement in my supply, literally within a day. HTH & good luck. It can be stressful but is very rewarding so I hope all goes smoothly for you & your baby. Smile

I totally agree with this.  For me, drinking lots of water and making sure I was getting a good amount of protein early in the day helped me with supply.  That and being dedicated to pumping - don't skip sessions at work.  For extra protein, we hard boiled eggs at the beginning of the week for me to take to work each day and I also drank protein shakes mid-morning.  I didn't worry about weight, as to me, the BF was more important.

I now have such a big freezer stash that DH has told me it is okay to slowdown (whatev!).  I am still nursing/pumping and I plan to go until end of August when DS turns 1.

  • Thanks! I will do that!
