Communiting to D.C. using public transportation

I have to go to DC for a few days next month and was thinking of taking public transportation.  Does anyone currently do this and if so what route do you take?  I need to end up Dupont Circle in DC and I'm coming from Carroll County so I was wondering if there is anyway to get there from Hunt Valley.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Communiting to D.C. using public transportation

  • You could take the light rail from Hunt Valley to Penn Station and then take the Marc train to Union Station in D.C. then get the DC metro to Dupont, but you shouldn't have to switch lines on that at least. I feel like this would take over 2 hours though.

  • The light rail is really slow.

It sucks that the Baltimore subway (which you could get on at Owings Mills) doesn't hook up with a MARC train.

ETA- how far would it be for you to drive to BWI rail and hop on a train there?

  • I would probably either drive to Penn Station or BWI and then take the MARC from there.  If you wanted to drive slightly further, you could drive to one of the DC Metro stops and go from there.  But I'd only do this depending on the time you had to be in DC...if it meant heading in towards DC in rush hour of any sort, I'd stick with leaving from Baltimore on MARC.

  • Thank guys, think I may look into driving to Penn or BWI instead of starting at Hunt Valley.  Good idea!
  • you have to pay for parking at BWI, not sure about Penn Station but I'd rather leave my car at BWI.

Its quick into DC on the MARC.  We use it for trips into the city since we can walk to the MARC station from our house.

  • You might also look into driving to the Glenmont or Shady Grove Metro stops and then taking the Red line to Dupont
