From past posts, I get the impression you know a thing or two about HR. I have a question for you (or anyone else who has some productive suggestions)- I have an intern student who is working for me who SMELLS TERRIBLE! It isn't even like your regular B.O.- more like moldy grandma's basement with some added unknown funk in the mix. It has gotten to the point that I can only be in the room with him for no more than 5 minutes at a time because his smell has literally given me severe migraines. Is addressing this something HR can do or do you have any suggestions on how to handle it?

It's an incredibly uncomfortable situation to address. You have to approach it with empathy and facts. Do you have a dress code policy with a hygeine paragraph in it to back you up? I would just say "you may not be aware but several people in the office have approached me about your clothes and body having an offensive odor. I have noticied this myself. I would ask him if he could identify why his clothes/body might have an odor. I would also ask him if he had solutions. If he is dense and not getting it then you need to lay it out for him.
Then I would say, "I believe the situation can be remedied by you bathing daily before you come to work and wearing freshly laundered clothing free of a musty smell". "Clothing should be changed daily etc". If he says that he has a medical reason for not bathing daily, I'd suggest to him the ass, pits, tits and face wh0re bath washing method with a wash cloth and soap, if that isn't suitable and he's still saying it's a medical issue we've had to request documentation from the physician of the employee and then move them through progressive disciplinary action if they do not comply.
A colleague and I had to address a femenine odor problem with an employee and that was so incredibly uncomfortable for her and us.
Thanks for the advice! It sounds a lot more professional than DH's suggestion of asking my intern "What soap do you use?" followed by the suggestion that he switch since it doesn't seem to be working.
I cannot imagine how awful it must have been for you to address that female employee. So embarassing!!
