Sending things internationally?

I just got back from visiting DH's cousin in Switzerland - it was truly amazing.  I want to send them a gift for their hospitality, but do I need to do anything differently or shop at a different type of online store to send internationally?  I know shipping will probably be astronomical, and if I order something with a plug, I will have to make sure to choose the correct one.  Any other advice?

It's probably no big deal in Switzerland, but check their customs guidelines to see if anything is restricted.

Also keep in mind that bulky items can be just as expensive to ship as heavy items.

I've never sent something e-commerce to an international address.  I always go to the post office. :-

If there's something we need that we can't get here, we order from Amazon with no issues at all.  Unless it's something like OTC drugs that aren't OTC here.  (We even were able to get gum!  Don't ask me how.)
