Re: Slut Walk

  • i love it.

    down with victim blaming!

  • Agreed!  I still can't fathom that there are men in this day and age who blame the way women dress.
  • Slut shaming is not ok. Instead of telling someone to stop dressing like a slut start telling people it's not okay to rape.
  • I think it's a really stupid way to talk about rape.  Slut is not a nice word, why would you want to "reclaim" it for yourself?

Not a fan.  I support the message behind it but I think the method is somewhat misguided.

  • It's amazing to me that in 2011 this lesson still needs to be taught.  Then again, I am not so shocked.  I think it's an interesting idea - though unfortunately I don't know that I will make an impact at all.  The people who won't pay any attention are probably the ones that should...

  • BBC Article on why the word SLUT is powerful

Reclaiming the word is powerful, and the term is important because of the history.

The protests started in response to a Canadian police officer saying in order to remain safe "women should avoid dressing like sluts"

  • I read the article and I understand the history of the walk.

I still respectfully disagree that it's a very effective way of empowering women or empowering women against sexual violence.

It's still approaching everything from a male dominated & male created view of sexuality.  Instead of redefining sexuality from a female-empowered perspective what it's actually doing is climbing right inside the male gaze and getting cozy with traditional signifiers of female sexuality.

an old friend who was date rape was asked by the cop if she was dressed slutty, i think this word is thrown around a lot and reclaiming is part of the healing process for a lot of women.

Whatever works I guess but that sort of makes me even sadder.
