So, my cell phone is ancient. It's a first-generation Verizon LG EnV... I think it's probably 4 years old. I have been really happy with it, because it's great for texting (open up QWERTY keyboard), and I like the alarm software on LGs (you can set it for weekday mornings, and forget about it... whereas DH's phone, he sets the alarm every night). Also, I can access basic versions of most websites I frequent on Metro (mainly Google, Google maps, Gmail and Facebook.)
I also have a really old plan. It's an "America's Choice" plan with a txt package and a $15 a month old-school data package. As in, I can go to most non-fancy websites. They might look a little funny, or act a little clunky, but I get the info I need.
Well, the "OK" button on the inside of my phone is broke. The rest of the phone works fine, but this is a very crucial button for texting, and some other functions.
So, I got an insurance replacement for $50. But, they sent me an EnV3. Not compatible with my plan. I'd have to change my plan. I don't want to change my plan, and if I do, I think I might just do a total overhaul. But, Verizon pi$$es me off. They now have tiered data plans, and you can't just buy and unlimited data package. Then, the guy on the phone tried to lie to me, by telling me that no other company offers an unlimited data plan (liar!) and, that there's NO WAY I'd use 2GB (their lowest plan). So, I said "Well, Sprint does. I'm not an idiot." Then, he bashed Sprint's network. I'm no longer bound by contract to Verizon - I haven't changed my plan in 3 or 4 years... so, I'm pretty much free to switch without penalty.
I'm thinking I will probably just try to get a refund of the $50 from the insurance company, hobble a long for a little while longer with el crappo phone, and make the leap to a smartphone very soon.
My question is - would you switch to Sprint? Is there another provider you'd recommend? I anticipate using quite a bit of data - we have a set-up where I could actually watch our TV on my phone (DH does it all the time, even DVR'ed programs...)
I'm not really an iPhone person... I will probably get some sort of android phone, if that matters.
Re: Stupid Verizon - WWYD?
I used to have Sprint, and then I changed to Verizon. Verizon's cell service is 1000 times better. Seriously. I didn't realize how awful Sprint's network was until I switched.
I'm not sure what I'd do if I was considering a smart phone and data plan with Verizon right now. They just switched to a tiered data plan system 1 week ago. I have a $30 unlimited data plan on my phone. I would shop around and see what kind of deals you can get with other companies.
Ugh. This is what I feared. I wish I would have done this a few weeks ago!!! Grrr.
re: the TV watching... http://www.slingmedia.com/ Slingbox. We've had one for about 5 or 6 years now (we're on our second) and it's the awesomest thing ever. Not only can we watch TV live on G's phone, we can watch TV (our TV) from any computer with a good enough internet connection. It's like magic. I really can't believe more people don't have these. The original reason I bought one for G was so he could watch his soccer games anytime, anywhere - since they used to be on a special pay-per-view package type thing.
We also own another SlingMedia product... it works like a wireless router in our house. The actual router is upstairs... but, our TV and other electronic equipment is downstairs. So, you plug this thing into the wall, and it allows you to have actual ethernet ports in another location in your house. I used to have to physically plug into the router to use my work computer at home, but, I could use this box thing instead (even though I couldn't use a wireless connection). The box also prevents us from needing to run wires all over the house - with NO DEGRADATION of the wireless signal. Before, we could use the gaming system wirelessly, but would have trouble surfing on the laptop at the same time. The gaming system (which we use for TV stuff and Netflix also) doesn't create wireless bandwidth issues, because we plug in through this box thingie.
I'm pretty sure T-Mobile has an unlimited data plan too! I have the 200mb for $15 but am pretty sure their unlimited data is $30
