Want to answer a clicky poll because I'm indecisive?

Law school is doing a pre-orientation that is "optional, but highly recommended".  There are events on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 3-6 p.m.  Additionally on Friday, all of the incoming 1Ls are invited to the Tigers/Indians game at 7:00 p.m.

I'm planning to go to everything, but am undecided about the game.  First of all, I won't get home until ~1 a.m. or would stay that night with our friends (neither of which is a huge dealbreaker).  The heart of the matter is that I'm just not a huge baseball fan (gasp!).  Sitting for hours watching a sport I'm not all that into with a bunch of mostly strangers doesn't sound all that appealing.  OTOH, it could be a reall good time and a chance to get to know some of my new classmates.

I'm tempted to email the school to ask if beer will be provided at the game.  That would definitely influence my decision Stick out tongue

Re: Want to answer a clicky poll because I'm indecisive?

  • If it were me, I'd probably skip it.  It will probably be a draining few days of orientation and you'll be ready to go home.  And while it's a bonding experience of sorts, I don't think skipping the game will hinder your success in law school.

Then again, I'm somewhat anti-social and hate social/business gatherings with strangers.  If I can get out of attending them, I will do so.

  • I agree with you, Kasa.  It's not like all of my 1L profs will be there, taking notes on who's in attendance.  I am also not a big fan of business/social things--I think it's the "we're telling you this is optional, but if you want to succeed at life, you'll be there" feeling.

That said, I've enjoyed the events I've been to so far (scholarship lunch at The Whitney and a tour of places to "play" Downtown).

The other events shouldn't be *too* draining.  Wednesday is pretty much just an information event (parking details, student id, book list, etc).  Thursday is a community service day.  Friday before the game there is a student org fair.

I'll probably just go...sigh...I almost always follow the results of my nest polls (I did make beef stirfry for dinner on Monday).

  • I hate social events like that. however one good thing about a game like that is that you are pretty much limited to socialilze with the people sitting very close. Plus you are stationed in a seat.  I hate cocktail type events, where you have to wander around and try to pretend you feel comfortable. I do much better at a dinner or event where I am seated next to someone and I can talk to that person.

It might be a good chance to strike up a connection with a few people and have a friendly face to look for when you start.

  • Is it in Detroit? Are they taking a bus or do you have to drive? If I had to spend money driving there's no way I'd go. I find baseball dreadfully boring, and wouldn't likely stay in my seat that long to talk to people anyway. I'd skip it if I felt like I'd put my time in at other, more important, things, unless I met someone(s) at the other events I actually wanted to hang out with.
