I think I read a while ago on these boards that you took courses to become a life coach. I am curious about becoming a coach myself. How did you get into it? What courses did you take? How long were they? Basically any information you could provide would be great!

Thanks!

  • Hi Robin!

I've always been interested in personal growth, and when I was considering leaving teaching almost 10 years ago I took a class at First Class in Dupont Circle where a life coach explained the profession and how to get into it. I think this class is still being offered all these years later!

Well, in late 2009 I finally accepted what I probably knew back then. I got in touch with Margarita, who not only taught the class but who I also hired as my coach for a few months in 2003, for what she recommended. She recommended the Coaches Training Institute to me, and I have never looked back.

I started in January through May 2010 with the five "live" 3-day "Coach Trainings" - 104 hours spread over 5 weekends (one about every 4 weeks). I took them in Silver Spring - very convenient. Many coach programs are online, but I loved the in-person element here and wouldn't trade it for the world. Just taking this set of courses means you can honestly say you're "trained" as a coach and you can start your practice with just this, if desired.

After that I knew I wanted to earn certification, so I did their program (which the International Coaching Federation recognizes) from July through December 2010. The 25-week program was all virtual - weekly class calls every other week, practice calls where you practice your skills with two other students those weeks in between the class calls, biweekly homework assignments, collecting 100 coaching hours with clients, supervised evaluation of 6 client calls, and then a written and oral exam. I was able to do this evenings and weekends, even with a full-time job and hour commute each way.

If your work already has elements of coaching in it, you might be able to get your organization to pay for your training. It's applicable in so many ways.

Best wishes to you deciding - I hope this is helpful. If you'd like to get together and chat contact me at dianaforbes1 AT gmail DOT com. I'd love to spread the coaching bug!
