So just around 9:30 pm our doorbell rang. I go to answer it, and it's two police officers. They were looking for a guy named Ricky who supposedly lives at my address. My H and I know no one by that name. Then I'm asked if we have an escalade or if we know anyone who does. Finally they ask if I just moved in (we closed last June, I officially moved in after the wedding). Then the abruptly turned and left.
So the reason for me starting to freak out is because when we moved in, we called a locksmith to rekey the locks since the owner locked the keys in the house including the one that was supposed to be in the realtor's lock box. The locksmith couldn't break in through the deadbolt, and had to go climb on the rocky slope that's behind our TH, climb over the fence and break in through the patio in order to let us in the front door. Since the lock was deemed "unbreakable" he rekeyed the interior garage door to match the front door. There is also a regular lock on the front door, but he couldn't rekey it to match the deadbolt but he did rekey it to a new key.
Problem lies in the fact that when I tried to double lock the front door tonight (usually only do the dead bolt), I realize that it's broken and the twist lock just turns and turns but doesn't lock. So now I'm worried that this dude has a copy of the key. The previous owner only bought this house about 3 or 4 years ago and he had renters living in the house when we purchased it. Husband had been here with the locksmith- if I had been there at the time I would have insisted on automatically rekeying all the locks regardless just for piece of mine.I was worried the first few nights in the house, but it hasn't bothered me now until tonight. I plan on going to the hardware store in the morning to get a new springlatch door knob so that I can have a bottom lock that actually locks in addition to the "unbreakable" deadbolt.
Re: Freaking out
If you're feeling unsafe, call a 24 hour locksmith and have them change the locks tonight. They'll charge a bit more, but I wouldn't risk it if you're super uncomfortable! Otherwise I'd definitely call a locksmith tomorrow and have it taken care of...I wouldn't keep the locks the same, especially since you've discovered a broken one and are suspicious of a previous renter still having a key.
I'd also consider calling the police if you think the broken lock has been tampered with. They'll come out, sweep your house and perimeter and take down your information. It's good to get it on record if you think someone potentially tried to get in. In these instances, its way better to be safe than sorry!
Please be safe and let us know how everything is tomorrow! Try to stay as calm as you can, even though I'd be freaking out too! Sending safe, positive vibes your way
I second all of this. Do what you need to do so you feel safe in your home. Sending hugs and positive vibes your way! Stay safe!
